On the Religious Characteristic of Council of Five Hundred in Athens

The council of five hundred in ancient Athens was one of the important mechanisms which reflected the Athenian democracy. Since it was deeply influenced by the traditional religion in Greece, the council of five hundred reflected much religious characteristic when it was in operation. This was reflected in the selection of the councilors and the internal organizations,in the decision on the meeting place and the meeting date and in the agenda of meetings. At the same time, such religious characteristic seriously affected the development of the Athenian democracy. It was only an incomplete democracy.
