Simocephalus vetulus can be reared in the dark on a diet of Scenedesmus, but not on a pure culture of Chlamydomonas moewusii, unless the latter is frequently stirred. This failure appears to result from the ability of this alga to adhere to the sides and bottom of the culture vessel where the cladoceran is apparently unable to ingest it.
