Abstract:From late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China, the English missionaries who wrote books on Wenzhou were William Edward Soothill, Lucy Soothill, Irving Scott and so on from the Methodist Mission Society and Grace Stott from the China Inland Mission. During their stay in Wenzhou, they had many conflicts with the local folklore in three aspects of food, dressing and marriage customs. In the premise of never giving up but feeling the superiority of the Christian cultures, the missionaries tried to adjust their attitude to the local folklore. However, their compromise and adjustment attributed to the survival needs and the evangelistic purpose which seemed utilitarian, but not to the wholehearted acceptance of the local folklore and the Chinese traditional culture.
