THE SKULL OF ERYTHROCULTER ILISHAEFORMIS AND ITS ADAPTATION OF FEEDING BEHAVIOR

Erythroculter ilishaeformis is one of the most commont freshwater fishes. The present paper reports the structure of skull based on the adaptation to the carivorious habit.1. The premaxilla and maxilla are fused with each other. The lower jaw develop very well.2. The skull of fish has two lateral frontal fossa and posstempotal fossa. The post—temporal fossa, into which the muscles and intermuscular bone pass for lnsertion on skull, is large and deep.3. On the lateral aspect, the skull has a special depressions, the lateral fossa of hyomandibula, for the insertion of dilator operculi muscles.4. There are three rows acute teeth in phangeal bone. These teeth are also quite functional in the adaptation to food catching habit.The features as above are adaptation to predatory habit.
