作者认为英语教学深化应体现在传授知识的同时着眼语言特征的讲解，加强学生对英语这门科学的了解，提高自学及运用能力．英语词汇突出特点是它的多义性．词是有生命的、可变化的，内涵是丰富的．应当特别注意英语小词，它是基本词汇中重要部分．词经搭配后形成新的概念是深化词汇教学的重点．现代英语语法特点是它的松懈性：词义注入语法而且语法大量以省略形式出现．根据语言特征，在学习方法上须加强逻辑分析的促进能力的提高．

ATTACHING IMPORTANCE TO CHARACTERISTICS OF ENGLISH TO IMPROVE STUDY ABILITY

What is important to English teaching in college is to deepen the students'understanding of the basic characteristics of English in the context of the general lawsand theory of language with an aim to better their grasp of English and their abilityfor self-study. In vocabulary learning, while remembering the words by heart, thestudents should understand that they are living, changeable, rich and multiple in meaning. They should pay particular attention to the 'small words' which constitute theessential part of English vocabulary. Phrases deserve equal attention too, because bycombining words, they give new meanings. In grammar learning, the students shouldunderstand the peculiarities of English, namely, looseness, blended with meaning ofwords and ellipsis . Therefore, the students should not merely memorize words andphrases and grammar niles in a rigid manner, but should study the language in ananalytical way, improve the study methods with emphasis on developing thed selfstudy abilities.
