A Study of the Agricultural loans of the Local Bank of Zhejiang in the Republican Period

In the 1930s and 1940s, the rural economy in China was at a exceedingly low ebb, there was a desperate shortage of rural finance, and the peasants were ruthlessly exploited by usurious loans. Under such conditions, as a new financial institution, the Local Bank of Zhejiang poured capital into Zhejiang's rural areas, and returned part of the capital which had flowed into Zhejiang's cities from Zhejiang's rural areas back. This new measure, without doubt, infused new blood into Zhejiang's rural finance, which had been short of capital and damaged by usurious loans. And it reenergized Zhejiang's rural economy. In the business of agricultural loans, the Local Bank of Zhejiang made bold explorations, took advantage of the situation and conditions of Zhejiang's rural areas, adopted effective measures suited to these areas, and finally played an examplinary role in the history of agricultural loans.
