Based on relevant theories of code-switching in sociolinguistics,the paper analyzes the dialogue in Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge and concludes that the code-switching in the novel is not only successful in constructing a vivid fictional world but is also consistent with Hardy's lifelong resistance to the strict division standard English and dialect,his critique on Victorian morality,and his artistic pursuit.
