Introduction of modular shipbuilding in Japan

Shipbuilders have become extremely competitive in the world market over the past 20 years. Eachcompany is forced to develop massive cost reduction and labor force reduction measures. After having givenattention to the cost reduction possibilities on the steel construction side, the shipyard has concentrated spe-cially on the reduction of the time-verse space relationship and the dependency of engine room outfitting onship block assembly at the slipway. This consideration led to the modularization of large engine room sec-tions into functional modules. The use situation of module is not good although the use of module in Japanshipyards has a long history. The cause is analyzed and some advi ces are given based on the investigation inthis paper.
