An Analysis of the Threshold Effect of Industrial Agglomeration on Economic Growth

Using the annual panel data of 31 provinces and cities from 2000 to 2017,with foreign trade as the threshold variable,the panel threshold model was used to explore the nonlinear relationship between industrial agglomeration and economic growth.The research results show that:the relationship between industrial agglomeration and economic growth has a foreign trade threshold effect,the foreign trade threshold is about 8.35%;in all over the nation,when the foreign trade level is below the threshold,industrial agglomeration has a greater impact on economic growth;and when foreign trade is higher than the threshold,industrial agglomeration has a smaller impact on economic growth.A robustness test using the fixed effects model found that the promotion of industrial agglomeration on economic growth will be affected by foreign trade.After dividing the sample into eastern,central and western regions,it is found that the foreign trade threshold is about 11.01% in the eastern region,about 8.06% in the central region,and there is no threshold effect in the western region.
