These great many rickshaw pullers were those bankrupted farmers. These rickshaw pullers＇ helpless state of survival was that they suffered serious exploitation and lived in extreme difficulties. Though the existence of rickshaw pullers＇ class accelerated the development of Guangzhou＇s manufacturing industry of rickshaw, there were still some rickshaw pullers tainted from some bad social habits, and even some rickshaw pullers engaging in many illegal activities. Confronting this condition, Guangzhou local government under Chen Jitang＇s ruling rectified and relieved this large numbers of rickshaw pullers to some certain extent.
