Ernst August Gutt first applied relevance theory to translation study.He points out that translation is an act of ostensive-inferential interlingual interpretation and of verbal communication.The basic principle constraining translation is the principle of relevance.A translator should presume the reporter's communicational act and search for optimal relevance that can be conveyed to the reader.A successful translation should be the intentions of reporter and the needs of reader resemble the original in relevant respects in cognitive environment.
