Abstract:This paper presents a new indicator named stability factor K.,and an iteration method by which the softening curve defined is simultaneously approached within the procedure of tracing the structural equilibrium conflgration.The Softening curve is a function of K and numerically represents a certain extent of structural softening and current status,therefore,both the load parameter and the corresponding load carrying capacity of a structure are derived according to the current stiffness be- haviour of a structure and the change of structural rigidity between two iteration steps.The ill-condi- tioned behaviour at the neighbourhood of the limit point can be detected sensitively,thus,the limit point on the equilibrium path could be inferred.A numerical example shows that present method is re- liable,by which a lot of computing time can be saved.
