Attributed String Matching for Handwritten Numeral Recognition

This paper presents a matching approach of attributed string forrecognizing free handwritten numerals.The input character is described as astring of boundary primitives with attributes.If the character can not berecognized conveniently after preclassification,its attributed string is matchedto references.A reference consists of segements with attribute constraintsand controlling parameters.Therefore,a structural and statistical interpretationof the shape of the character is simultaneously performed,and an efficientimplementation of the matching is also realized.When an attributed string isnot uniquely matched to a single reference and when several particular recog-nition results are obtained,a further discrimination stage is invoked.Rejectedcharacters are inspected carefully through human intervention.For 1500 testsamples,the successful recognition rate of computer simulation is 92.6%.It isstrongly assumed that the proposed scheme is applicable if some improvementson it can be achieved.
