On the Patriotic and Reclusive Feelings of Jiang Jie

Jiang Jie was a ci poet living from the end of Song to the early Yuan dynasty. Experienced the great turmoil of Yuan＇ s replace of Song, he suffered great pains brought about by the deaths of his loved ones and the falling of Song Empire. In ci, a popular literature style of that time, he expressed his complicated feelings of depression, great sorrow, loneliness, and even madness. Patriotic emotions can also be seen from his ci. Feeling hopeless, he went into seclusion and eventually found his peace in the scenic landscape and his carefree life. His unwillingness to serve for Yuan Empire shows his solitary and noble moral integrity.
