A Predictive Flow Control Scheme for Wide Area Networks

We propose a predictive flow control scheme for ATM wide area networks in the presence of un controlled traffic and available bit rate (ABR) traffic . In the nth frame,the amount of the bandwidth consumed by future un controlled traffic is predicted by each switch. The amount of the bandwidth for future ABR traffic is thus obtained and pre allocated to the ABR connections. Fairness and efficiency is guaranteed by using the so called synchronous flow control policy (Synchronous flow control scheme using Explicit Rate indications SER,proposed by the same author). The proposed scheme is investigated in the presence of (VBR+ABR) integrated traffic in our simulations.Numerical results show that the predictive SER scheme is fair and efficient in bandwidth allocation.Queues at switches are very short.
