Cultural Differences and Pragmatic Failure in Translation

Translation is a communicative act among languages and cultures. It must be accurate and fluent. Accuracy in translation lies in its pragmatic meaning. However, cultural differences between Chinese and English often lead to pragmatic failures in translation, or even cultural shocks and conflict. This paper attempts to explain, from the pragmatic perspective, the notion of pragmatic failure in translation and furthers on the deep-rooted culture, how the theoretical insights of pragmatics can inform the practice of translation, and how it should be applied in translation for pragmatic equivalence.
