A Narratology-based Analysis of Waiting for the Barbarians

J.M. Coetzee is a famous writer who has unique perception and understanding to literature in contemporary world. In his arguably best work, Waiting for the Barbarians, Coetzee applies characterized allegorical writing, not for direct teaching readers but enabling them to appreciate in different contexts. On the basis of narratology, this paper attempts to explore how the point of views, narrative focus and the tone contribute to understanding of the theme of the fiction.
