欧元将于１９９９年１月１日起如期正式启动，这是欧盟一体化进程的历史性突破．欧元的启动将增强欧盟的国际竞争力，对美国和日本提出挑战，给发展中国家加快经济合作提供借鉴，也必将对我国经济和贸易产生深远的影响．

EURO AND THE WORLD ECONOMY

Euro will start officially on January 1, 1999, which marks a historic breakthrough in the progress of the EU integration. The very operation of Euro will inevitably enhance the international competitive power of EU, however, it poses a great challenge against the U. S. and Japan. Meanwhile, it sets a good example for the developing countries to expedite their economic cooperation. The article reviews the development process of Euro in the recent years and makes a preliminary and exploratory research on its significance to the world economy, especially its farreaching influence on China's economy and trade.
