Abstract:A lot of formulas are derived by the continuum approach to evaluate the lateral drift and the internal forces of the coupled shear walls with the stiffening beams under a lateral concentrated load acting at arbitrary level. These formulas are employed to study the effects of the stiffening beams on the dynamic characteristics. Setting up stiffening beams can decrease the natural period. The optimum location of the stiffening beam for achieving the minimum fundamental natural period is near 0.5 H (where H is the total height of the structure). The stiffening beams will have less effect on the mode shapes of the structure.
