煽情小说是英国1860年代颇具争议的一类＂问题＂小说。它们在当时深得大众读者欢心,却备受评论谴责,之后长达百年被评论和学界忽视。近年来,这类＂无足轻重＂的小说被重新发现,再一次被严肃认真地对待,而且正在从边缘走向中心,成为研究维多利亚文学和文化不可或缺的一部分。从现象、特点和影响对煽情小说这一文类进行引介,以期引起国内研究的关注。

Victorian ＂Secret＂：The Sensation Novel of the 1860s

The ＂sensation novel＂ was a controversial genre of fiction all the rage in England in the 1860s and 70s.Although widely read,it was lambasted in strident tones by contemporary critics and had been overlooked until the 1980s when there was a revival of interest in the phenomenon of the sensation novel which is no longer regarded as indisputably unimportant or devoid of interest in studies of Victorian literature and culture.The interest continues apace in the West,with many questions of the enigma of the genre remaining hotly contested.The article introduces it through three aspects in order to promote Chinese studies in the area.
