Abstract:The establishment of a mathematical model for assessing water pollution by using periphyticprotozoan communities is presented together with its application. The basic principle is thatthe water body pollution level is remarkably reflected in the structural variation of periphyticprotozoan community.Samples for analyses were taken from five water bodies of different pol-lution levels with slide method in 1989.The data which include species composition and abun-dance of the periphytic protozoan communities were subjected to ecological analysis andstatistical treatment.A mathematical model,pattern recpgnition,for evaluating water qualitywas established. Data of samples of periphytic protozoan community collected in 1990 and1992 were analysed by this model.Results indicate that the model is a feasible,and effectivemethod in the assessment of water pollution by using periphytic protozoan communities.
