Abstract:To study the influence factors of the stability of BS700 high-strength steel box section columns fabricated by welding channel sections, the nonlinear buckling analysis finite element model was established which took geometric deflection and residual stress into consideration. This paper studied the influence factors of the residual stress, width-thickness ratio of flange and slenderness ratio on the stability of the columns. The study reveals that the residual stress has a significant influence on the stability of columns with slenderness ratio between 20 and 70. The flange width-thickness ratio also greatly influences the stability of columns. With the increase of flange width-thickness ratio, the buckling mode of columns gradually changes from overall buckling to local buckling. When the width-thickness ratio is less than 30, the residual stress has a great influence on the stability of columns, with the maximum exceeding 10%. When width-thickness ratio is more than 40, the residual stress has little influence. Columns with medium slenderness ratio are more sensitive to residual stress. The slenderness ratio has an important influence on the stability of columns. With the increase of slenderness ratio, the stability factor of all columns decreases. However, the influence of slenderness ratio on the stability of columns varies with the flange width-thickness ratio and section side ratio, while there is little influence on the stability of columns with compact section(with small flange width thickness ratio and section side ratio).
