The Modernization of Shandong Cotton Textile Industry in the Early 20th Century

Cotton textile industry played an important role in Shandong economy. In the early 20th century, cotton mills appeared in Shandong. They had some modern characteristics in respects of technical equipment, way of management and human supplies. The modern characteristics of cotton weaving were manifested mainly in two aspects: one was the constant innovation of tools; the other was the emergence of mill organizations. Handicraft was still the main mode of cotton weaving. To study the modernization of cotton textile industry has typical meanings in studying the economic modernization in Shandong.
