A Style of Borrowing, a Style of Uniqueness--A Discussion on the Characteristics of Distilling and Absorbing of Others' Strong Points in Liu Zongyuan's Allegories

By starting with his attitudes towards literature creation, this article aims at analying a character of Liu Zongyuan's allegories, that is , the style of distilling and absorbing others' strong points. Which, however, is in no way less unique. As far as the source of materials is concerned, Liu learned from legends written in the Tang Dynasty and obtained the materials for his allegories from real life. Efforts were made in weaving the plot and depicting the character in a realistic way. As to his writing skills, Liu must have been influenced by Meng zi. The eloquent style prevailed in the Pre-Qin essays is also explicit in his allegories. In character portray, he put the emphasis on exactness and vividness which was drawn from Shiji. On the base of that, he developed a language that is concise and ironic in his allegories.
