Abstract:The present paper presents with the results of the studies on the morphlogy and infectivity of nuclear polyhedrosis virus, a pathogen of the disease of the simao pine caterpillars Dendrolimus Kikuchii Matsumura (lepidopteraslasiocam-pidae) . The polyhedra of Dendrolimus Kikuchii Matsumura nuclear polyhedrosis virus (DKMNPV) are irregular polygon in profile. Individual polyhedron may be triangular, pentagonal, quadrilateral or hexagonal. The polyhedra vary considerably in size, ranging from 1.3u to Su, with a mean of 1.8u. The virus particles occur either in single rods or in bundles of rods. The size of the single rods virus from 37 mu to 43 mu x 400 mn to 420 averaging 40 x 410 mu and that of bundles is 196 mu in width. According to the classification recently proposed by the Tnuertebrate Virus Subcommittee of the International Ccmmittee on Nomenclature of Virus the virus of Dendrolimus Kikuchii Matsumura belongs to subgenus A of the family Baculovirus. The results of bioassay study showed that mortality rate of the virus treated larvae varied 43.93-68.21%. The LD50 for the third-instar lavae is 1x105.9 polyhedra/ml. The larval mortality rate increased with the increase of the concentration of polyedral suspension.
