Each character is the whole entity composed of social identity and inner self.One's social identity is reflected through the communication with others.However,relationships with others are marked by inadequacy,which is rooted in the wrong and biased knowledge of another person,for it mingles with his own needs and sensibilities.When one's social identity is frustrated in the society,these sensitive figures retreat to their soul and seek for release of the real self through memory and solitude.However,too much indulgence in the inner self will damage the mental stability.Therefore,Woolf seems to suggest an effective way of existence by alternating between the social identity and inner self.
