The Return of the Native is the first tragedy by Thomas Hardy in the real sense. Different from previous novels, the Egdon Heath is no longer the paradise for people to settle in and enjoy life. Instead, it takes on a look of indifference and even of cruelty. Accordingly, rural life here is no longer full of simple joys but tends to change towards more materialistic satisfaction under the impact of industrial development. The major characters in the novel, some of them choose to return while others try hard to escape - all end up in same fate. That is, they are all lost in the torrents created by the combined forces of fate and society. While creating this novel, Hardy has had a more mature idea of tragedy, which is embodied by the major character and their destinies. Once again, Hardy pays tribute to the spirit of struggle against fate and the independent self - consciousness.
