Comparison of the epiproct structure of two closely related species, Sweltsa fidelis (Banks) and S. revelstoka (Jewett) (Plecoptera: Chloroperlidae)

The male epiprocts of 2 closely related western Nearctic species, Sweltsa fidelis (Banks) and S. revelstoka (Jewett), were examined using SEM. The males of these 2 species have been historically distinguished by epiproct measurements. The ratio of the length of the base to greatest width versus total epiproct length ranges from 0.49 μm to 0.67 μm (￣ x = 0.56) in S. fidelis and 0.55 μm to 0.69 μm (￣ x = 0.60) in S. revelstoka . Similarities in measurement suggest that the location of the greatest epiproct width is not a reliable and consistent character for distinguishing males of these 2 species.     

A markup model for forecasting inflation for the euro area

We develop a small model for forecasting inflation for the euro area using quarterly data over the period June 1973 to March 1999. The model is used to provide inflation forecasts from June 1999 to March 2002. We compare the forecasts from our model with those derived from six competing forecasting models, including autoregressions, vector autoregressions and Phillips‐curve based models. A considerable gain in forecasting performance is demonstrated using a relative root mean squared error criterion and the Diebold–Mariano test to make forecast comparisons. Positive selection of CD4+ T cells mediated by MHC class II-bearing stromal cell in the thymic cortex

T lymphocytes differentiate in the thymus, where functionally immature, CD4+CD8+ (double positive) thymocytes develop into functionally mature CD4+ helper cells and CD8+ cytotoxic (single positive) T cells. The thymus is the site where self-reactive T cells are negatively selected (clonally deleted) and where T cells with the capacity to recognize foreign antigens in association with self-proteins encoded by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are positively selected. The net result of these developmental pathways is a T-cell repertoire that is both self-tolerant and self-restricted. One unresolved issue is the identity of the thymic stromal cells that mediate the negative and positive selection of the T-cell repertoire. Previous work has pointed to a bone-marrow-derived macrophage or dendritic cell as the inducer of tolerance, whereas a radiation-resistant, deoxyguanosine-resistant thymic cell seems to mediate the positive selection of self-MHC restricted T cells. Thymic stromal cells in the cortex interact with the T-cell antigen receptor on thymocytes. Using several strains of transgenic mice that express the class II MHC molecule I-E in specific regions of the thymus, we show directly that the positive selection of T cells is mediated by an I-E-bearing cell in the thymic cortex.     

Records of stoneflies (Plecoptera) from Nevada

Distributional data are presented for 13 species of Nevada stoneflies including eight species new to the state list. A checklist of 30 species confirmed for Nevada is included.     

The platypus in Edinburgh: Robert Jameson,Robert Knox and the place of the Ornithorhynchus in nature, 1821–24

The duck-billed platypus, or Ornithorhynchus, was the subject of an intense debate among natural historians in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Its paradoxical mixture of mammalian, avian and reptilian characteristics made it something of a taxonomic conundrum. In the early 1820s Robert Jameson (1774–1854), the professor of natural history at the University of Edinburgh and the curator of the University's natural history museum, was able to acquire three valuable specimens of this species. He passed one of these on to the anatomist Robert Knox (1791–1862), who dissected the animal and presented his results in a series of papers to the Wernerian Natural History Society, which later published them in its Memoirs. This paper takes Jameson's platypus as a case study on how natural history specimens were used to create and contest knowledge of the natural world in the early nineteenth century, at a time when interpretations of the relationships between animal taxa were in a state of flux. It shows how Jameson used his possession of this interesting specimen to provide a valuable opportunity for his protégé Knox while also helping to consolidate his own position as a key figure in early nineteenth-century natural history.     

Immunoglobulin synthesis by cord blood lymphocytes

Summary The IgG, IgA and IgM synthesis by adult peripheral blood and cord blood lymphocytes incubated alone and with pokeweed mitogen was quantitated. The cord blood lymphocytes produced no immunoglobulin even with mitogen stimulation while the adult peripheral blood lymphocytes responded to the mitogen with a significant (p<0.04) increase in immunoglobulin production.
