Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass die Aggregation der Bettwanzen (Cimex lectularius) durch einen von beiden Geschlechtern abgegebenen Versammlungsduft eingeleitet wird. Letzterer ist in Methylalkohol, aber nicht in Diäthyläther löslich, verdampft bei 32°C und lockt unbegattete sowie begattete Wanzen beider Geschlechter an. Die Lockreaktion ist von der Duftmenge abhängig und bleibt bei antennenlosen Wanzen aus. Die Stinkdrüsen gereizter, respektive verletzter Bettwanzen sondern Hex-2-en-1-al und Oct-2-en-1-al als Alarmduft ab, der die Zerstreuung der Wanzengruppen hervorruft.     

A point mutation in the last intron responsible for increased expression and transforming activity of the c-Ha-ras oncogene

The T24/EJ allele of the Ha-ras proto-oncogene owes its powerful oncogenic activity not merely to the well documented mutation that perturbs the structure of the encoded polypeptide, but in addition to a second single nucleotide alteration in an intron that causes a tenfold increase in expression. This effect on expression is maintained upon transfer of the surrounding DNA to a heterologous gene, and as such defines a novel regulatory element.

The use of mobile media and their applications in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti is a current, prime example, and also speaks to the capacity of technology to remedy the natural disasters that strike the world.

Missense mutations interfere with VEGFR-3 signalling in primary lymphoedema

Primary lymphoedema is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder that leads to a disabling and disfiguring swelling of the extremities and, when untreated, tends to worsen with time. Here we link primary human lymphoedema to the FLT4 locus, encoding vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3 (VEGFR-3), in several families. All disease-associated alleles analysed had missense mutations and encoded proteins with an inactive tyrosine kinase, preventing downstream gene activation. Our study establishes that VEGFR-3 is important for normal lymphatic vascular function and that mutations interfering with VEGFR-3 signal transduction are a cause of primary lymphoedema.
