Discovery of Jupiter's 'gossamer' ring

Jupiter's ring system has previously been described as being composed of a 'bright' narrow ring and an interior, vertically-extended halo. The one image which reveals this morphology most clearly is Voyager 2's parting shot of the Jupiter system, a wide-angle (WA) view of the ring ansa in forward-scattered light (FDS 20693.02). The bright ring is plainly visible, and the halo appears after slight contrast enhancement. By further enhancement of this image we have discovered an additional ring, which is far fainter than either of the (already faint) components previously identified, extending to a radius of 210,000 km.     

Temperature trends over the past five centuries reconstructed from borehole temperatures

For an accurate assessment of the relative roles of natural variability and anthropogenic influence in the Earth's climate, reconstructions of past temperatures from the pre-industrial as well as the industrial period are essential. But instrumental records are typically available for no more than the past 150 years. Therefore reconstructions of pre-industrial climate rely principally on traditional climate proxy records, each with particular strengths and limitations in representing climatic variability. Subsurface temperatures comprise an independent archive of past surface temperature changes that is complementary to both the instrumental record and the climate proxies. Here we use present-day temperatures in 616 boreholes from all continents except Antarctica to reconstruct century-long trends in temperatures over the past 500 years at global, hemispheric and continental scales. The results confirm the unusual warming of the twentieth century revealed by the instrumental record, but suggest that the cumulative change over the past five centuries amounts to about 1 K, exceeding recent estimates from conventional climate proxies. The strength of temperature reconstructions from boreholes lies in the detection of long-term trends, complementary to conventional climate proxies, but to obtain a complete picture of past warming, the differences between the approaches need to be investigated in detail.     

Effects of enterally- and parenterally-administered bombesin on intestinal luminal tryptic activity and protein in the suckling rat

Summary Because of the presence of bombesin-like immunoreactivity in milk we investigated if enteral administration of bombesin affects the intestinal luminal content of trypsin and protein in 12-14-day-old rats. Bombesin (40 g/kg), given either orogastrically or subcutaneously, produced a significant elevation in the intestinal content of trypsin activity. Thus, enterally-administered bombesin can produce acute biologic effects in suckling rats.     

Effect of adaptation level on maintained firing and sensitivity in receptive field center of X and Y cells

Maintained firing rates of X cells and Y cells were compared at 6 adaptation levels (AL) between -2.71 log cd/m2 and 2.28 log cd/m2 (10 mm2 pupil size). X cell maintained firing was higher at all ALs and was statistically different at medium and high ones. Changes in AL had nearly identical effects upon X and Y cell suprathreshold sensitivity to a flashing spot in the center of their receptive fields; the Weber function had a slope of 0.744 for Y cells and 0.743 for X cells. These values are not statistically different.     

Choroidal vascular repair: Scanning and transmission electron microscopy

Repair of the choroidal vasculature following laser photocoagulation in the rat was examined with vascular casts and correlated with observations on thin-sections. The regenerative process began at the periphery of the damaged area, starting from the surviving choriocapillaris and venules, and proceeding towards the center by means of recanalization of damaged vessels and growth of new ones. In small healed lesions the capillary bed was re-formed. It resembled the adjacent undamaged choriocapillaris morphologically but appeared to be less dense than the intact choriocapillaris when examined by scanning microscopy. In large lesions the capillary bed was re-formed at the periphery but not at the center. Also present at the edges of the large lesions were groups of new vessels which, when observed by scanning microscopy, appeared to extend in two directions; towards the subretinal space and towards the choroidal network. Another aspect of the repair process was the simultaneous occurrence of new vessel growth and capillary regression, which was observed both at the level of the choriocapillaris and at the foci of new vessels
