Isolation of bacteriophages from the bovine rumen

Zusammenfassung Die Isolierung der im Pansen vorkommenden Bakteriophagen wird erstmals beschrieben. Bakteriophagen, dieStreptococcus bovis und PansenSerratiae spp. angreifen, wurden aus vielen Pansen-Proben isoliert und eingehend untersucht;Bacteroides ruminicola Phage wurde dabei nicht aufgefunden.

Zusammenfassung Es wird festgestellt, dass 3 Wochen nach Beendigung einer Clofibrate-(CPIB)-Diät an Ratten manche «Hepotocyte Peroxisomen» (Mikrokörper) bisher nicht beschriebene, ultra-organische Veränderungen von unbekannter Bedeutung zeigen, die mit der experimentellen Behandlung in Zusammenhang stehen dürften.     

Conduction block in capsula interna fibres caused by striatal spreading depression in rats

Zusammenfassung «Spreading depression» im Corpus Striatum kurarisierter Ratten beeinflusst weder spontane EEG noch die visuelle Reizantwort in der Hirnrinde; jedoch kommt es zu einer ungefähr 1 min andauernden, erheblichen Erniedrigung der kortikalen Primärantwort auf somatosensorische Reize. Die Resultate deuten darauf hin, dass die Faserbündel in der Capsula Interna, die in der Striatummasse zerstreut liegen, durch eine erhöhte Kalium-Konzentration blockiert sind.     

A low density of 0.8 g cm(-3) for the Trojan binary asteroid 617 Patroclus

The Trojan population consists of two swarms of asteroids following the same orbit as Jupiter and located at the L4 and L5 stable Lagrange points of the Jupiter-Sun system (leading and following Jupiter by 60 degrees ). The asteroid 617 Patroclus is the only known binary Trojan. The orbit of this double system was hitherto unknown. Here we report that the components, separated by 680 km, move around the system's centre of mass, describing a roughly circular orbit. Using this orbital information, combined with thermal measurements to estimate the size of the components, we derive a very low density of 0.8(- 0.1)+0.2 g cm(-3). The components of 617 Patroclus are therefore very porous or composed mostly of water ice, suggesting that they could have been formed in the outer part of the Solar System.     

Mutations in TMPRSS6 cause iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA)

Iron deficiency is usually attributed to chronic blood loss or inadequate dietary intake. Here, we show that iron deficiency anemia refractory to oral iron therapy can be caused by germline mutations in TMPRSS6, which encodes a type II transmembrane serine protease produced by the liver that regulates the expression of the systemic iron regulatory hormone hepcidin. These findings demonstrate that TMPRSS6 is essential for normal systemic iron homeostasis in humans.     

Discovery of a new population of high-energy gamma-ray sources in the Milky Way

One of the great mysteries of the high-energy gamma-ray sky is the group of approximately 170 unidentified point sources found along the Galactic plane. They are more numerous than all other high-energy gamma-ray sources combined and, despite 20 years of effort, no clear counterparts have been found at other wavelengths. Here we report a new population of such objects. A cluster of approximately 20 faint sources appears north of the Galactic Centre, which is part of a broader class of faint objects at mid-latitudes. In addition, we show in a model-independent way that the mid-latitude sources are distinct from the population of bright unidentified sources along the Galactic plane. The distribution on the sky indicates that the faint mid-latitude sources are associated with the Gould belt of massive stars and gas clouds at approximately 600 light years distance, as has been previously suggested.     

Additions to the vascular flora of Wyoming

Eight species previously unreported for Wyoming are listed. A range extension is noted for Erigeron humilis, and Cymopterus bipinnatus is verified as occurring in Wyoming.
