Summary In calves with hypoxic pulmonary hypertension, resistance was reduced by 40±3% with normoxia, 19±4% with verapamil, and 60±1% with hexoprenaline. It is possible that the increased resistance during normoxia is due partly to vasoconstriction rather than solely to vascular thickening, and that the vasoconstriction is due to an abnormality in calcium metabolism by the hypertensive vasculature.Acknowledgments. Cooling the skin of cattle at an ambient temperature of 25 degrees C decreased cardiac output and increased systemic and pulmonary vascular resistances. Minute ventilation was reduced by about 50%. There was no change in alveolar ventilation as measured by arterial blood gases. These results indicate that thermoregulatory ventilation has significant cardiopulmonary effects in cattle at normal laboratory temperatures.  相似文献

Long-term potentiation (LTP) of excitatory synaptic transmission could be a mechanism underlying memory. Induction of LTP requires Ca2+ influx into postsynaptic neurons through ion channels gated by NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors in hippocampus (area CA1 and dentate gyrus) and neocortex. Here we report that a component of LTP not requiring the activation of NMDA receptors can be induced in area CA1. The component is dependent on tetanus frequency, requires increases in postsynaptic intracellular Ca2+ concentrations, and is suppressed by an antagonist of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels.  相似文献

Photorefractive materials exhibit a spatial modulation of the refractive index due to redistribution of photogenerated charges in an optically nonlinear medium. As such, they have the ability to manipulate light and are potentially important for optical applications including image processing, optical storage, programmable optical interconnects and simulation of neural networks. Photorefractive materials are generally crystals, polymers and glasses with electro-optic or birefringent properties and noncentrosymmetric structure. Here we report the photorefractive effect in both non-centrosymmetric and centrosymmetric azo-dye-doped silica glasses, in which refractive index gratings that are spatially phase-shifted with respect to the incident light intensity pattern are observed. The effect results from a nonlocal response of the material to optical illumination, and enables the transfer of energy between two interfering light beams (asymmetric two-beam coupling). Although the writing time for the present grating is relatively slow, we have achieved a two-beam coupling optical gain of 188 cm(-1) in the centrosymmetric glasses, and a gain of 444 cm(-1) in the non-centrosymmetric structures. The latter are fabricated using a corona discharge process to induce a permanent arrangement of azo-dye chromophores.  相似文献

Arabidopsis thaliana has emerged as a model system for studies of plant genetics and development, and its genome has been targeted for sequencing by an international consortium (the Arabidopsis Genome Initiative; http://genome-www. stanford.edu/Arabidopsis/agi.html). To support the genome-sequencing effort, we fingerprinted more than 20,000 BACs (ref. 2) from two high-quality publicly available libraries, generating an estimated 17-fold redundant coverage of the genome, and used the fingerprints to nucleate assembly of the data by computer. Subsequent manual revision of the assemblies resulted in the incorporation of 19,661 fingerprinted BACs into 169 ordered sets of overlapping clones ('contigs'), each containing at least 3 clones. These contigs are ideal for parallel selection of BACs for large-scale sequencing and have supported the generation of more than 5.8 Mb of finished genome sequence submitted to GenBank; analysis of the sequence has confirmed the integrity of contigs constructed using this fingerprint data. Placement of contigs onto chromosomes can now be performed, and is being pursued by groups involved in both sequencing and positional cloning studies. To our knowledge, these data provide the first example of whole-genome random BAC fingerprint analysis of a eucaryote, and have provided a model essential to efforts aimed at generating similar databases of fingerprint contigs to support sequencing of other complex genomes, including that of human.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Das elektrophoretische Muster von Histonen und sauren Zellkernproteinen von Hühnerembryonen und deren primären und sekundären Fibroblastzellen wurde qualitativ und quantitativ verglichen.
