To study the possible mechanism of the age-dependent involution of the notochord, isolated mesenchymefree notochords of chick embryos were cultured in vitro and compared with their counterparts in vivo. Two different aspects were evaluated: (1) DNA synthesis measured by [3H]thymidine incorporation and visualized by autoradiography and (2) cell death quantified by counting the number of pyknotic nuclei. The results demonstrate that [3H]thymidine uptake by notochords shows an age-dependent decrease in vitro as well as in vivo. The number of [3H]thymidine-labelled notochord cells, however, is higher in vitro than in vivo. At the same time, there is an age-dependent increase in pyknosis in the notochord in vivo and in vitro. So, during the aging process, the number of both pyknotic nuclei and of [3H]thymidine-labelled nuclei suggest a high turnover of notochord cells in vitro. From these results, we can conclude that the process of involution in aging notochord seems to be controlled by a programmed intrinsic process, which might be influenced partially by the microenvironment in vivo. 相似文献

Bringing together leaf trait data spanning 2,548 species and 175 sites we describe, for the first time at global scale, a universal spectrum of leaf economics consisting of key chemical, structural and physiological properties. The spectrum runs from quick to slow return on investments of nutrients and dry mass in leaves, and operates largely independently of growth form, plant functional type or biome. Categories along the spectrum would, in general, describe leaf economic variation at the global scale better than plant functional types, because functional types overlap substantially in their leaf traits. Overall, modulation of leaf traits and trait relationships by climate is surprisingly modest, although some striking and significant patterns can be seen. Reliable quantification of the leaf economics spectrum and its interaction with climate will prove valuable for modelling nutrient fluxes and vegetation boundaries under changing land-use and climate. 相似文献

Variable expression of Ia antigens on the vascular endothelium of mouse skin allografts 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ia antigens are membrane-bound glycoproteins that play a part in antigen recognition and subsequent cell-cell interactions in the immune response. In the mouse they are coded for by the I region of the major histocompatibility complex H-2 and have been demonstrated on B lymphocytes, monocytes, activated T cells, macrophages and dendritic cells, including Langerhans cells. Ia-like antigens have also been detected on the vascular endothelium in man and on epidermal keratinocytes in rats but expression on the latter cells was induced by a graft-versus-host reaction or by contact hypersensitivity. In the mouse, previous studies have suggested that Ia antigens in skin are restricted to epidermal Langerhans cells and it was thought that these were the targets for Ia-dependent rejection of skin allografts. The results presented here show that Ia antigens in mouse allografts are also present on the vascular endothelium but their expression is variable and dependent on the immunological status of the recipient. These findings suggest that vascular endothelial cells can act as targets in Ia-incompatible skin allograft rejection. 相似文献

A tobacco mosaic virus-induced tobacco protein is homologous to the sweet-tasting protein thaumatin 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Infection of tobacco plants with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) results in an increase in the activities of several enzymes and induces the de novo synthesis of about 10 proteins that are protease-resistant and soluble at pH 3. These proteins accumulate in the intracellular leaf space. The appearance of pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins is closely associated with the phenomenon of 'systemic acquired resistance' and it has been suggested that such proteins have an antiviral function. Previously, we cloned complementary DNAs to the messenger RNAs for the three smallest PR proteins, PR-1a, -1b and -1c, and these clones were used to show that there is an increase of more than 100-fold in the concentration of PR-1 mRNAs following TMV infection of tobacco. Here, we describe the cDNA cloning of another mRNA whose synthesis is induced by TMV infection. Sequencing of the cDNA showed that the encoded protein is highly homologous to thaumatin, the intensely sweet-tasting protein from the fruits of the monocot Thaumatococcus daniellii Benth, a West African rainforest shrub. The conservation of a gene encoding a thaumatin-like protein in tobacco suggests that the encoded protein may have a more general function than that of being sweet-tasting. 相似文献
