Radio harness system for bobcat kittens

Eight bobcat kittens were fitted with a specially designed harness system supporting a radio transmitter. These kittens were the youngest known to be radio-instrumented. This system was used successfully through two seasons, from June 1989 to January 1991. Litters of kittens were located soon after birth for weighing, marking, and aging (by tooth eruption). During the first year when kittens were at least eight weeks old and six weeks old the second year, attempts were made to radio-instrument kittens in each litter. This harness system allowed litters to be located periodically until their death or dispersal. We were able to collect important data during the most crucial and least known weeks of the lives of bobcat kittens.     

Zoogeographic patterns and faunal change of South Dakota fishes

We summarized historic and recent fish distributions in South Dakota and analyzed fish faunal similarity at 2 spatial scales (geomorphic province and river drainage) for both historic (native) and recent (post-1990) faunas. We quantified zoogeographic patterns between geomorphic provinces and among neighboring river drainages for historic and recent faunas. We also quantified faunal change (species losses and additions) between provinces and among drainages. Ninety-seven fishes were native to South Dakota, but 111 fishes were present in recent collections because 8 native species were missing, and 22 nonnatives were present. There was high β diversity among historic and recent river drainage fish faunas, but there was between 22% and 56% faunal change between periods. Recent faunas were homogenized compared to historic faunas at both provincial and river drainage spatial scales. Patterns of nonnative species establishment were geographically distinct from patterns of native species loss. Most nonnative species additions were in cold-water or human-made habitats of the Great Plains. Most native species declines stemmed from warm water streams of the Central Lowlands and Missouri River valley. Conservation of rare and declining native species and containment of nonnatives are both necessary to preserve historical patterns of fish biodiversity in South Dakota.     

Macrocortin: a polypeptide causing the anti-phospholipase effect of glucocorticoids

Anti-inflammatory glucocorticoids inhibit prostaglandin (PG) biosynthesis by preventing arachidonic acid release from phospholipids rather than inhibiting the cyclooxygenase. As in other cells, this steroid action depends on receptor occupation and de novo protein/RNA biosynthesis. We have previously shown in guinea pig perfused lungs and rat peritoneal leukocytes that the effect of steroids in PG generation is mediated by an uncharacterized 'second messenger'. Now, we report that this factor (which we have named 'macrocortin') is an intracellular polypeptide whose release and synthesis are stimulated by steroids. Macrocortin derived from rat peritoneal leukocytes is very similar to that released from guinea pig lungs.     

Behavioural and electrophysiological evaluation of oviposition attractants forCulex quinquefasciatus say (Diptera: Culicidae)

The attraction of gravidCulex quinquefasciatus by the oviposition pheromone,erythro-6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide, and by polluted water is described. Both materials increase oviposition and when combined the effect is additive. The oviposition behaviour is reflected by the antennal sensitivity to these compounds.     

Opportunities for new research using the post-2001 ONS Longitudinal Study

The addition of 2001 Census data to the ONS Longitudinal Study extends the range of research topics that this unique data resource can support. Census questions on religion, care-giving and self-rated health that were asked for the first time in 2001 and the repetition of 1991 questions on limiting long-standing illness and ethnicity raise opportunities for new longitudinal investigation in these areas. This article describes how new 2001 methodologies including data imputation, the One Number Census and de jure enumeration affect the LS database. The support service for existing and prospective LS users is described.     

Genetic hypertension in rats is accompanied by a defect in renal prostaglandin catabolism.

Noradrenaline releases prostaglandins in the kidney, and in rats these augment rather than reduce vasoconstriction produced by the amine. Homogenates of kidneys of New Zealand rats inbred for hypertension exhibit lower prostaglandin inactivation by 15-hydroxydehydrogenase than controls. At the same time, augmentation of noradrenaline vasoconstriction by the released prostaglandin is exaggerated. This biochemical defect could be the inherited abnormality primarily responsible for the development of hypertension in these animals.
