Small isotopic differences between the silicate minerals in planets may have developed as a result of processes associated with core formation, or from evaporative losses during accretion as the planets were built up. Basalts from the Earth and the Moon do indeed appear to have iron isotopic compositions that are slightly heavy relative to those from Mars, Vesta and primitive undifferentiated meteorites (chondrites). Explanations for these differences have included evaporation during the 'giant impact' that created the Moon (when a Mars-sized body collided with the young Earth). However, lithium and magnesium, lighter elements with comparable volatility, reveal no such differences, rendering evaporation unlikely as an explanation. Here we show that the silicon isotopic compositions of basaltic rocks from the Earth and the Moon are also distinctly heavy. A likely cause is that silicon is one of the light elements in the Earth's core. We show that both the direction and magnitude of the silicon isotopic effect are in accord with current theory based on the stiffness of bonding in metal and silicate. The similar isotopic composition of the bulk silicate Earth and the Moon is consistent with the recent proposal that there was large-scale isotopic equilibration during the giant impact. Mechanoelectrical transduction, the conversion of mechanical force into electrochemical signals, underlies a range of sensory phenomena, including touch, hearing and balance. Hair cells of the vertebrate inner ear are specialized mechanosensors that transduce mechanical forces arising from sound waves and head movement to provide our senses of hearing and balance; however, the mechanotransduction channel of hair cells and the molecules that regulate channel activity have remained elusive. One molecule that might participate in mechanoelectrical transduction is cadherin 23 (CDH23), as mutations in its gene cause deafness and age-related hearing loss. Furthermore, CDH23 is large enough to be the tip link, the extracellular filament proposed to gate the mechanotransduction channel. Here we show that antibodies against CDH23 label the tip link, and that CDH23 has biochemical properties similar to those of the tip link. Moreover, CDH23 forms a complex with myosin-1c, the only known component of the mechanotransduction apparatus, suggesting that CDH23 and myosin-1c cooperate to regulate the activity of mechanically gated ion channels in hair cells. 相似文献

Semiweekly mark and recapture livetrapping was conducted July-October 1985 to determine the effectiveness of wheat treated with inomethacin, a prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor, to control the productivity of a wild population of montane voles ( Microtus montanus ) in southeastern Idaho. Before treatment, control (C) and experimental (E) groups, each on ca 0.3 ha, were statistically equal in population size ( ̄X ± SD; C = 50 ± 21, E = 45 ± 14), adult female: male ratio (C = 1:0.8, E = 1:0.7), juvenile:adult ratio (C =0.16:1, E = 0.13:1), number of juveniles per 100 females ( ̄X ± SD; C = 27 ± 8, E = 21 ± 18), and percentage of pregnant females ( ̄X ± SD; C = 44 ± 10, E = 46 ± 17). After the 15-week experiment all population categories were unchanged for the control group and significantly (P ≤ .05) lower for the experimental group, which ended with a final population of ( ̄X ± SD) 17 ± 6, with 7 ± 21 juveniles per 100 females and an 11 ± 14% pregnancy rate. 相似文献

Techniques for locating, capturing, and monitoring activities and movements of Flammulated Owls were developed during four years of study. Adults responded to imitated territorial song throughout the nesting season. Nests were found by noting vocalizations and behaviors associated with courtship-feeding and food transfers between the sexes. After fledging, broods were difficult to follow, unless the young or adults were radio-tagged. Adults and young were captured with noose poles, hoop nets, and mist nets. Backpack harnesses and tail-mounted transmitters were used on adults and backpacks on fledglings. Transmitter life was 30–40 nights. 相似文献

Anti-cancer agents that have been made selective for tumour cells by exploiting the known differences in the availability of oxygen between normal and transformed cells are a promising development in cancer chemotherapy. We have recently suggested a new type of bioreductive activity which would depend on a two-electron reduction. For rational design of such compounds, it is essential to be able to predict the redox potentials and the chemical modifications needed to produce the optimum redox value. Calculating redox potentials is a daunting task for the theoretician, however, as the effect of water solvation is clearly of major significance. Recent successful calculations of differences in the free energies of biologically important molecules in aqueous solution using the free-energy perturbation method prompted us to apply the technique to the computation of two-electron redox potentials. The results are accurate to within 20 mV, suggesting that we should be able to manipulate redox potentials by successfully predicting structures with the appropriate value. 相似文献
