Distribution of the Shoshone scuplin ( Cottus greenei: Cottidae) in the Hagerman Valley of south central Idaho

Cottus greenei, a potentially threatened species endemic to Idaho, was collected from 49 localities in 25 springs/streams in south central Idaho. Most localities were along the north bank of the Snake River in waters of the Thousand Springs formation, Gooding County. One population was found in a spring in the main Snake River. Another sculpin, Cottus bairdi, was collected with C. greenei at 23 locations in 16 springs/streams. Confusion concerning the type locality of Cottus greenei is discussed.        

Establishment of Shoshone sculpin ( Cottus greenei ) in a spring inhabited by mottled sculpin ( C. bairdi )

The Shoshone sculpin ( Cottus greenei ) is found only in springs of the Thousand Springs formation along the Snake River in Idaho. In 1983 a small population of Shoshone sculpin was introduced into an unnamed spring in the Thousand Springs formation in an attempt to increase the range of the species. Previously, the only sculpin in that spring was the mottled sculpin ( Cottus bairdi ). The Shoshone sculpin was able to establish itself and become the predominant fish within 8 years.     

Structure of a human common cold virus and functional relationship to other picornaviruses

We report the first atomic resolution structure of an animal virus, human rhinovirus 14. It is strikingly similar to known icosahedral plant RNA viruses. Four neutralizing immunogenic regions have been identified. These, and corresponding antigenic sequences of polio and foot-and-mouth disease viruses, reside on external protrusions. A large cleft on each icosahedral face is probably the host cell receptor binding site.     

Effects of thyroxine and exercise on the glandular and plasma levels of corticosterone in the male rat

Summary The results presented here demonstrates that the thyroid gland is essential for normal corticosterone production. They further show that exercise stimulates this production whether the thyroid gland is present or not. The release or metabolism of corticosterone seems dependent upon an intact thyroid gland since plasma levels of corticosterone are decreased during exercise if the thyroid is absent. The administration of thyroxine is not sufficient to renew these levels.     

Inside polyomavirus at 25-A resolution.

Empty capsids and complete virions of polyomavirus crystallize isomorphously. Here we use difference Fourier analysis of X-ray diffraction data at 25-A resolution from these crystals to obtain an electron-density map of the inside of the virion. The polyomavirus capsid is built from 72 pentamers of VP1 that form three different types of connections in the T = 7d icosahedral surface lattice. Self-assembly of purified recombinant VP1 into capsid-like aggregates has shown that switching of the bonding specificity to form the unanticipated non-equivalent connections is an inherent property of the VP1 pentamers. Our map of the inside of the virion displays 72 prongs of electron density extending from the core into the axial cavities of the VP1 pentamers. We identify these prongs with the VP2 and VP3 molecules, which may function to guide the assembly of the highly ordered capsid on the nucleohistone core. The atomic structure of the closely related simian virus-40 capsid has been determined from the high-resolution diffraction data. Our polyomavirus map, calculated using all the low-resolution diffraction data, shows no indication of regular order inside the spherical core.     

Studies on the swelling of rat-liver mitochondria in relation to tumor incidence during feeding of aminoazo dyes

Résumé Dans des groupes de rats nourris à un régime contenant du 3-méthyl-p-diméthylaminoazobenzène, on constate, qu'il y a un accroissement soudain, à 4 semaines, de l'incidence de tumeurs hépatiques. Cette observation établit une correlation directe entre la cancérogenèse et le minimum des courbes de gonflement des microsomes et des mitochondries de foies de rats, nourris dans les mêmes conditions.     

Possible tropical lakes on Titan from observations of dark terrain

Titan has clouds, rain and lakes--like Earth--but composed of methane rather than water. Unlike Earth, most of the condensable methane (the equivalent of 5?m depth globally averaged) lies in the atmosphere. Liquid detected on the surface (about 2?m deep) has been found by radar images only poleward of 50° latitude, while dune fields pervade the tropics. General circulation models explain this dichotomy, predicting that methane efficiently migrates to the poles from these lower latitudes. Here we report an analysis of near-infrared spectral images of the region between 20°?N and 20°?S latitude. The data reveal that the lowest fluxes in seven wavelength bands that probe Titan's surface occur in an oval region of about 60?×?40?km(2), which has been observed repeatedly since 2004. Radiative transfer analyses demonstrate that the resulting spectrum is consistent with a black surface, indicative of liquid methane on the surface. Enduring low-latitude lakes are best explained as supplied by subterranean sources (within the last 10,000 years), which may be responsible for Titan's methane, the continual photochemical depletion of which furnishes Titan's organic chemistry.     

Modifying quantitative forecasts of livestock production using expert judgments: An application to the australian lamb industry

The judgmental modification of quantitative forecasts has become increasingly adopted in the production of agricultural commodity outlook information. Such modifications allow current period information to be incorporated into the forecast value, and ensure that the forecast is realistic in the context of current industry trends. This paper investigates the potential value of this approach in production forecasting in the Australian lamb industry. Several individual and composite econometric models were used to forecast a lamb-slaughtering series with a selected forecast being given to a panel of lamb industry specialists for consideration and modification. The results demonstrate that this approach offers considerable accuracy advantages in the short-term forecasting of livestock market variables, such as slaughtering, whose values can be strongly influenced by current industry conditions.
