Complementary Use of Rasch Models and Nonlinear Principal Components Analysis in the Assessment of the Opinion of Europeans About Utilities

Two non-standard techniques – the Rasch Model and Nonlinear Principal Components Analysis – originally proposed in other fields are presented and discussed to measure the opinion of European citizens about utilities. The Eurobarometer survey data are thus considered. The potential of both methods and their complementary use are highlighted; in particular the methods allow the questionnaire to be calibrated, the role of different services and aspects of service to be established, and the consumer satisfaction to be assessed and compared among European countries, different years and services.     

Meteoric smoke fallout over the Holocene epoch revealed by iridium and platinum in Greenland ice

An iridium anomaly at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary layer has been attributed to an extraterrestrial body that struck the Earth some 65 million years ago. It has been suggested that, during this event, the carrier of iridium was probably a micrometre-sized silicate-enclosed aggregate or the nanophase material of the vaporized impactor. But the fate of platinum-group elements (such as iridium) that regularly enter the atmosphere via ablating meteoroids remains largely unknown. Here we report a record of iridium and platinum fluxes on a climatic-cycle timescale, back to 128,000 years ago, from a Greenland ice core. We find that unexpectedly constant fallout of extraterrestrial matter to Greenland occurred during the Holocene, whereas a greatly enhanced input of terrestrial iridium and platinum masked the cosmic flux in the dust-laden atmosphere of the last glacial age. We suggest that nanometre-sized meteoric smoke particles, formed from the recondensation of ablated meteoroids in the atmosphere at altitudes >70 kilometres, are transported into the winter polar vortices by the mesospheric meridional circulation and are preferentially deposited in the polar ice caps. This implies an average global fallout of 14 +/- 5 kilotons per year of meteoric smoke during the Holocene.     

The dopamine autoreceptor agonist B-HT 920 markedly stimulates sexual behavior in male rats

B-HT 920, a selective agonist at dopamine (DA) autoreceptors, strongly increased the incidence of penile erections (PE) in male rats, an effect which was dose-related and antagonized by haloperidol. B-HT 920 at 100 and 200 micrograms/kg i.p. significantly altered the copulatory pattern of sexually active male rats, reducing the number of mounts and intromissions as well as the latency to the first ejaculation, a stimulant effect which was confirmed in sluggish males at a dose of 100 micrograms/kg.     

ACTH-induced hyperalgesia in rats.

The injection of ACTH 1--24 into the cerebral ventricles in rats markedly reduces the reaction time in the hot-plate test and the nociception threshold in the tail-stimulation test. Morphine antagonizes and naloxone potentiates this hyperalgesic effect of ACTH. It is proposed that ACTH peptides play a physiological role in nociception.     

Genome-wide association study reveals three susceptibility loci for common migraine in the general population

Migraine is a common, heterogeneous and heritable neurological disorder. Its pathophysiology is incompletely understood, and its genetic influences at the population level are unknown. In a population-based genome-wide analysis including 5,122 migraineurs and 18,108 non-migraineurs, rs2651899 (1p36.32, PRDM16), rs10166942 (2q37.1, TRPM8) and rs11172113 (12q13.3, LRP1) were among the top seven associations (P < 5 × 10(-6)) with migraine. These SNPs were significant in a meta-analysis among three replication cohorts and met genome-wide significance in a meta-analysis combining the discovery and replication cohorts (rs2651899, odds ratio (OR) = 1.11, P = 3.8 × 10(-9); rs10166942, OR = 0.85, P = 5.5 × 10(-12); and rs11172113, OR = 0.90, P = 4.3 × 10(-9)). The associations at rs2651899 and rs10166942 were specific for migraine compared with non-migraine headache. None of the three SNP associations was preferential for migraine with aura or without aura, nor were any associations specific for migraine features. TRPM8 has been the focus of neuropathic pain models, whereas LRP1 modulates neuronal glutamate signaling, plausibly linking both genes to migraine pathophysiology.     

Sodium deoxycholate promotes the absorption of heparin administered orally, probably by acting on gastrointestinal mucosa, in rats

Sodium deoxycholate (DOC), selected as a promoter of gastrointestinal absorption of heparin, was administered orally to rats, followed, at increasing intervals, by heparin. Maximal plasma clearing activity (PC) was obtained with a 60-min interval, though PC was still elicited after 24 h, suggesting that DOC acts on the gastrointestinal mucosa. Inhibition of blood coagulation was also observed after oral heparin. The suggestion that DOC increases heparin absorption is supported by increased plasma levels of heparin. No signs of several gastrointestinal damage were seen.
