Evidence for recycled Archaean oceanic mantle lithosphere in the Azores plume

The compositional differences between mid-ocean-ridge and ocean-island basalts place important constraints on the form of mantle convection. Also, it is thought that the scale and nature of heterogeneities within plumes and the degree to which heterogeneous material endures within the mantle might be reflected in spatial variations of basalt composition observed at the Earth's surface. Here we report osmium isotope data on lavas from a transect across the Azores archipelago which vary in a symmetrical pattern across what is thought to be a mantle plume. Many of the lavas from the centre of the plume have lower 187Os/188Os ratios than most ocean-island basalts and some extend to subchondritic 187Os/188Os ratios-lower than any yet reported from ocean-island basalts. These low ratios require derivation from a depleted, harzburgitic mantle, consistent with the low-iron signature of the Azores plume. Rhenium-depletion model ages extend to 2.5 Gyr, and we infer that the osmium isotope signature is unlikely to be derived from Iberian subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Instead, we interpret the osmium isotope signature as having a deep origin and infer that it may be recycled, Archaean oceanic mantle lithosphere that has delaminated from its overlying oceanic crust. If correct, our data provide evidence for deep mantle subduction and storage of oceanic mantle lithosphere during the Archaean era.     

饮用水氯化消毒新副产物的研究

在深入研究饮用水中强致突变物MX的过程中,发现了一个前人从未研究过的氯化消毒副产物.在实验室模拟氯化,经分离、提纯制备得到了该新副产物的纯化合物,通过GC/MS、IR、1H NMR 和13CNMR和四圆X单晶衍射等多种现代仪器的分析表征,确定了该新副产物的结构,并将其命名为2,2,4-三氯-5-甲氧基环戊-4-烯-1,3-二酮(TCMCD).接着在实验室自行设计合成了TCMCD的标样,同时也用全合成的方法再次确认了TCMCD结构的正确性.研究建立了饮用水中TCMCD富集分离、定性定量的分析方法,并对一些水厂的水样进行了检测,最高浓度可达80.1 ng/L.采用Ames实验对TCMCD的毒性进行了初步研究,结果表明其具有一定的致突变性.     

Serotonergic and cholinergic interaction in the regulation of pituitary-adrenal function in rats

It has been proposed that the central serotonergic inputs which modulate pituitary-adrenal secretion are mediated by cholinergic neurons. We have tested this hypothesis in intact rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with cholinergic and serotonergic agents which enhanced transmitter function and with receptor blocking agents. Agents were injected, singly and in combination, into both unstressed and stressed animals. Since the response to cholinergic agents might be due to changes to vasopressin release, Brattleboro (vasopressin deficient) rats were also injected with cholinergic agents. The level of plasma corticosterone at 1-h post-injection was determined. Results indicate that the serotonin receptor blockade decreased the stimulatory, cholinergic effect of physostigmine. Cholinergic receptor blockers did not significantly reduce the corticosterone rise induced by 5-hydroxytryptophan. These results do not support the hypothesis of cholinergic mediation of serotonergic input. Nicotinic and muscarinic receptors appeared to exert opposing influences on the system. The nicotinic receptor antagonist was able to block the stimulatory effect of physostigmine. The muscarinic receptor antagonist significantly elevated plasma corticosterone levels. No differences were found in the effect of physostigmine on Brattleboro rats as compared to controls. These data are interpreted as suggesting that 1) the acetylcholine-induced stimulation of pituitary-adrenal function is mediated, in part, by serotonergic neurons; and 2) stimulation of nicotinic receptors is facilitatory whereas stimulation of muscarinic receptors is inhibitory to pituitary-adrenal function.     

Cannabiripsol: a novel Cannabis constituent.

Cannabiripsol [(-) (6aR, 9S, 10S, 10aR)9,10-dihydroxy-hexahydrocannabinol] (1), a new cannabinoid was isolated from a South African Cannabis variant. The structure was determined by spectral means and by synthesis.     

Brain adenylate cyclase activation in the jaundiced rat.

Adenylate cyclase responses of brain cortex and neostriatum to noradrenaline and dopamine are increased in rats with jaundice in proportion to its severity. In comparing the situation with uraemia, the relevance of phenols has to be considered.     

Isolation of a potent allergen from house dust mite by interaction with the lectin tridacnin

Summary Tridacnin, the lectin from the clamTridacna maxima, precipitates with house dust mite extracts and provides a simple procedure for obtaining a potent, purified mite allergen. Helium isotope compositions of Machangqing copper deposit in western Yunnan, China

Helium isotopic composition of inclusion fluid in pyrites from Machangqing copper deposit, China, has been measured. The measurements, with³He/⁴He ratios ranging from 0.46–2.08 Ra, indicate that the helium in ore-forming fluid is a mixture of crust and mantle, and are consistent with the fact that the parental magma responsible for the formation of ore-forming fluid of the deposit is of crust-mantle provenance.
