Emericid,a new polyether antibiotic fromStreptomyces hygroscopicus (DS 24 367)

Summary Emericid is a new polyether polycyclic ionophore antibiotic excreted byStreptomyces hygroscopicus (DS 24 367). Active in vitro against Gram-positive bacteria, it is ineffective in vivo. At a 0.006–0.02% level in the diet it protects chickens and rabbits against coccidiosis.From a recent paper byN. Otake (Tetrahedron Lett.1970, 4147) emericid and lonomycin would be identical.     

Molliorin-c,a further pyrroloterpene present in the spongeCacospongia mollior

Summary A new pyrroloterpene, molliorin-c (III), has been isolated from the spongeCacospongia mollior. StructureIII was assigned to molliorin-c on spectral grounds and confirmed by synthesis.This investigation was supported by a grant of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Rome.     

Studies on the etiology of the experimental neuropathy from industrial adhesive (glues)

Summary Chickens treated by paintbrushing with glue distillate (used in shoe industries), hydrocarbon mixture and TOCP in hexane, developed paralysis (4/5); in these, we have demonstrated a diffuse degeneration of the myelinic sheath of the peripheral and central neurites. Besides TOCP, cyclohexane (because of its higher concentration in the glue distillate and in the hydrocarbon mixture) may be indicated as responsible for occupational neuropathy.Acknowledgments. Natural and experimental interspecific hybridization between populations ofDolichopoda cave crickets

Summary Evidence of hybridization between 2 pairs of allopatricDolichopoda species is provided by electrophoretic analysis. Occurrence of hybrids was revealed by laboratory crosses and in nature both by occasional co-existence due to passive dispersal and by transplantation experiments.This research was supported by the National Research Council, Italy, grant No. 78.01441.04, and by funds of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Rome.
