Association scan of 14,500 nonsynonymous SNPs in four diseases identifies autoimmunity variants

We have genotyped 14,436 nonsynonymous SNPs (nsSNPs) and 897 major histocompatibility complex (MHC) tag SNPs from 1,000 independent cases of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), multiple sclerosis (MS) and breast cancer (BC). Comparing these data against a common control dataset derived from 1,500 randomly selected healthy British individuals, we report initial association and independent replication in a North American sample of two new loci related to ankylosing spondylitis, ARTS1 and IL23R, and confirmation of the previously reported association of AITD with TSHR and FCRL3. These findings, enabled in part by increased statistical power resulting from the expansion of the control reference group to include individuals from the other disease groups, highlight notable new possibilities for autoimmune regulation and suggest that IL23R may be a common susceptibility factor for the major 'seronegative' diseases.     

Frequency stabilization and linewidth narrowing with modulation transfer spectroscopy

We report laser frequency stabilization with modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) on ⁸⁵Rb atoms. With both PZT (piezo-electric transducer) slow-loop feedback and current fastloop feedback to the laser head, we get a linewidth narrowing less than 5 kHz simultaneously. Laser injection to a laser diode and frequency beating with another polarization spectroscopy based stabilization setup are also employed to check the narrow linewidth property. With the help of the technique, a linewidth around kHz-level laser is obtained and pave the way for the locking of the lattice laser of ytterbium clock with transfer cavity technique. The setup can be used as a frequency reference for precise frequency control of atomic clock system.     

The distribution of the oil derived from Cambrian source rocks in Lunnan area, the Tarim Basin, China

There are great differences in biomarks between Cambrian oil and Middle-Upper Ordovician oil. In this stuty, the authors analyzed 40 oils found in Lunnan area by GC-MS and calculated the content of Cambrian oil in the 40 oils according to the steroid indexes of typical oil mixture and match experiment. The results show that it is a general phenomenon in Ordovician reservoir that the oil derived from Cambrian source rock mixed with the oil derived from Middle-Upper Ordovician source rock in Lunnan area, the mixture degree of the two oils is lower in Carboniferous reservoir than in Ordovician reservoir, and the oils kept in Triassic reservoir have single source, Middle-Upper Ordoviclan source rock. The mixture oils mainly composed of Cambrian oil （〉50%） distributed in Sangtamu fault zone, and the oils found in Lunnan fault zone are Middle-Upper Ordovician oil. This distribution of oils in Lunnan area is owing to that Lunnan fault zone is located in anticline axis part, Lunnan fault zone underwent serious erosion, and the oils from Cambrian source rock accumulated in Lunnan fault zone were degraded completely during Caledonian-Hercynian movement. But the Cambrian oil accumulated in Sangtamu fault zone was not degraded completely and some of them were left for the location of Sangtamu fault zone is lower than Lunnan fault zone. Later, the oil derived from Middle-Upper Ordovician source rock mixed with the remained Cambrian oil, and the mixture oil formed in Sangtamu fault zone.

MIMO Adaptive Control System for Human Arterial Blood Pressure by Drug

This paper presents modeling and simulation of a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) adaptive control system (ACS) for human arterial blood pressure (HABP) by multiple drug inputs -infusion speed (IS) control of inotropic agent (IA) and vasoactive agent (VA). The MIMO ACS is able to choose the most appropriate IS of IA and VA at good IS in order to maintain the aortic pressure (AOP) and central vain pressure (CAP) at desired levels, and at the same time to increase the cardiac output (CO).This ACS simulation consists of 3 parts: the system model (SM), the identifier (ID), and the explicit multivariable self-turning controller (MSC). The SM is a 2-input 2-output bilinear model with nonwhite system noise. The variable ID is capable of estimating the variable onset delay model (BNVD). The ID is capable of estimating the variable onset delay online by compressing the value in gaining the unbiased parameter estimation with an improved generalized least-squares (LS) algorithm. The MSC employs the minimum variance one-step-ahead control law. These three parts make a closed-loop control system successfully for heart disease patients during and after the operation.

Dominance rank of adult females and mating competition in Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in the Qinling Mountains, China

Dominance hierarchy reflects resource competition in male primates as well as females.In this study,we collected data on the social rank and mating competition of female Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys from September 2009 to June 2010 in the Qinling Mountains,Shaanxi,China.Displacement was used to determine social hierarchy of the studied wild females.A total of 1223 displacement bouts between adult females and 316 mating behaviors within one-male units(OMUs) were recorded.Competitive displacement among females was very low(0.22 displacements per observation hour).The dominant ranks of females in target OMUs were determined by displacement,from one OMU to another:JB unit:YL > DBC > YCM >XBC > BD;JZT unit:XHW > JG > DT;PK unit:QQ > TM > HF;LP unit:SK > TH > WM.Higher-ranking females performed significantly more sexual behavior than lower-ranking females in this rare monkey.High-ranking females were more likely to win mating contests within those OMUs.Based on these studies,we assessed the social relationships among adult females and clarified possible explanations for the strategies of female mating competition in the OMUs.Furthermore,the notion that reproductive success may also be related to female dominance hierarchies in this polygynous species should be considered in future research.     

Dynamic portfolio choice under the time-varying, jumps, and knight uncertainty of asset return process

By introducing a stochastic element to the double-jump diffusion framework to measure the Knight uncertainty of asset return process,this paper builds the model of dynamic portfolio choice, which maximizes the expected utility of terminal portfolio wealth.Through specifying the state function of uncertainty-aversion,it utilizes the max-min method to derive the analytical solution of the model to study the effect of the time-varying,jumps,and Knight uncertainty of asset return process on dynamic portfolio choice and their interactions.Results of comparative analysis show:The time-varying results in positive or negative intertemporal hedging demand of portfolio,which depends on the coefficient of investor’s risk aversion and the correlation coefficient between return shift and volatility shift;the jumps in asset return overall reduce investor’s demand for the risky asset,which can be enhanced or weakened by the jumps in volatility;due to the existing of the Knight uncertainty,the investor avoids taking large position on risky asset,and the resulting is the improving of portfolio’s steady and immunity.At last,an empirical study is done based on the samples of Shanghai Exchange Composite Index monthly return data from January 1997 to December 2009,which not only tests the theoretical analysis but also demonstrates that the proposed method in the paper is useful from the aspect of portfolio’s equivalent utility.
