Peritoneal Mouse macrophage were used to study the stimulation of cell DNA synthesis by polyoma virus. Using ultraviolet-irradiated polyoma virus, it was possible to show a difference between the inactivations of infectivity and of induction of DNA synthesis. By statistically analysis of these two phenomena it was found that 39% of the viral genome is necessary for the induction of cell DNA synthesis.     

Evidence of abnormalities in net sodium and potassium fluxes in erythrocytes of patients with essential hypertension]

A new and simple laboratory test for measuring net Na+ and K+ fluxes in Na+-loaded/K+-depleted human erythrocytes was developed and applied to hypertension. Moderate essential hypertension was characterized by a constant increase in net K+ influx; more severe cases showed a drop in net Na+ efflux. Na+ and K+ erythrocyte fluxes were found to be normal in hypertension of renal origin.     

Increased urinary excretion of cyclic nucleotides in X-linked hypophosphatemic (Hyp) mice

Hyp mice, a model for human X-linked hypophosphatemia, had elevated urinary cyclic AMP, cyclic GMP, and magnesium excretion compared to normal mice. The data suggest a renal origin of the urinary cyclic nucleotides. No significant differences in plasma cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP were observed between genotypes.

Summary A modification of the thin layer chromatography on grooved chromatoplate is described, which reduces the usual equipment to a very simple and inexpensive extent.     

Permeability of cellophane membranes to parotid proteins during dialysis

Summary Pooled parotid saliva was dialyzed in cellophane membranes against water for periods of up to 1 week and loss of proteins was monitored by acrylamide gel-electrophoresis. A gradual loss of cationic proteins was observed whereas anionic proteins were not appreciably affected. Loss of the cationic proteins could be greatly reduced by performing dialyses against dilute electrolyte solutions rather than water. Purification from human plasma of endogenous sodium transport inhibitor(s)

Na+,K+-ATPase inhibitors extracted from plasma of healthy human subjects displaced 3H-ouabain binding to human erythrocytes and inhibited the Na+ efflux catalyzed by the Na+,K+-pump and unexpectedly the Na+,K+-cotransport system without alteration of the Na+,Na+-exchange or the Na+ passive permeability. This suggests the presence in healthy human plasma of endogenous factors with ouabain-like and furosemide-like activities.
