Paradoxical effect of quinidine upon coronary flow of the isolated heart at different temperatures

Zusammenfassung Nach Langendorff wird am isolierten Kaninchenherzen gezeigt, dass die Temperatur der Durchströmungsflüssigkeit sowohl an spontan schlagenden wie auch an elektrisch gereizten Herzen bei Kammerflimmern die Koronarienwirkung des Chinidins grundsätzlich abzuändern vermag. Bei 26°C Temperatur wird der Koronardurchfluss durch Chinidin ständig erhöht, während bei 38°C Chinidin die Herzkranzgefässe verengert.     

The influence of inorganic thiophosphate on the conversion of parathion to paraoxon in rat liver slices

Zusammenfassung An Leberschnitten von Rattenweibchen wurde festgestellt, dass anorganisches Thiophosphat die Oxydation von Parathion zu Paraoxon hemmt. Dies hängt von den variierenden Konzentrationen des Substrates und des Inhibitors gemäss der antikompetitiven Hemmung ab.

Zusammenfassung Nach Verminderung des arteriellen Blutdruckes ist die Senkung der Natrium- und Wasserausscheidung grösser in der innervierten als in der denervierten (transplantierten) Niere. Es konnte festgestellt werden, dass der verminderte Blutdruck der unteren Körperhälfte bei gleicher Filtration eine vermehrte tubuläre Natrium- und Wasserreabsorption der innervierten Niere hervorruft.     

The discovery of atmospheric condensation nuclei by Paul-Jean Coulier in 1875

Zusammenfassung 1875 hatPaul-Jean Coulier, Professor für Chemie und Hygiene an der Medizinischen Militärschule Val de Grâce in Paris, mit einfachen Mitteln die Rolle der atmosphärischen Kondensationskerne bei der Nebelbildung entdeckt und viele wesentliche Tatsachen beschrieben. Erst 5 Jahre später erfolgte die erste Arbeit vonAitken. Die Geschichte dieser Entdeckung und die Ursache dafür, dass sie nicht besser bekannt wurde, wird besprochen.     

Multiobjective optimization and multivariable control of the beer fermentation process with the use of evolutionary algorithms

This paper describes empirical research on the model, optimization and supervisory control of beer fermentation.Conditions in the laboratory were made as similar as possible to brewery industry conditions. Since mathematical models that consider realistic industrial conditions were not available, a new mathematical model design involving industrial conditions was first developed. Batch fermentations are multiobjective dynamic processes that must be guided along optimal paths to obtain good results.The paper describes a direct way to apply a Pareto set approach with multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs).Successful finding of optimal ways to drive these processes were reported.Once obtained, the mathematical fermentation model was used to optimize the fermentation process by using an intelligent control based on certain rules.     

Rational imitation in preverbal infants

Here we show that if an adult demonstrates a new way to execute a task to a group of infants aged 14 months, the children will use this action to achieve the same goal only if they consider it to be the most rational alternative. Our results indicate that imitation of goal-directed action by preverbal infants is a selective, interpretative process, rather than a simple re-enactment of the means used by a demonstrator, as was previously thought.     

Defective prelamin A processing and muscular and adipocyte alterations in Zmpste24 metalloproteinase-deficient mice

The mouse ortholog of human FACE-1, Zmpste24, is a multispanning membrane protein widely distributed in mammalian tissues and structurally related to Afc1p/ste24p, a yeast metalloproteinase involved in the maturation of fungal pheromones. Disruption of the gene Zmpste24 caused severe growth retardation and premature death in homozygous-null mice. Histopathological analysis of the mutant mice revealed several abnormalities, including dilated cardiomyopathy, muscular dystrophy and lipodystrophy. These alterations are similar to those developed by mice deficient in A-type lamin, a major component of the nuclear lamina, and phenocopy most defects observed in humans with diverse congenital laminopathies. In agreement with this finding, Zmpste24-null mice are defective in the proteolytic processing of prelamin A. This deficiency in prelamin A maturation leads to the generation of abnormalities in nuclear architecture that probably underlie the many phenotypes observed in both mice and humans with mutations in the lamin A gene. These results indicate that prelamin A is a specific substrate for Zmpste24 and demonstrate the usefulness of genetic approaches for identifying the in vivo substrates of proteolytic enzymes.
