The mating call of Pelophylax ridibundus and Pelophylax kurtmuelleri from three syntopic and five allotopic populations was studied. All recordings were made during the mating season. We tested the hypothesis that the call of P. ridibundus from allotopic populations would differ from that in syntopic populations with P. kurtmuelleri. For the comparative analysis we used univariate and multivariate statistical methods and the following characteristics: call duration, pulse group duration, pulse group interval, pulse group period, pulse group number, minimum, maximum, fundamental and dominant frequencies and pulse energy. Analyses reveal a trait divergence in most of the studied characteristics of the signals, with stronger differentiation between P. kurtmuelleri and P. ridibundus in syntopic populations than between the two species in allotopic ones. The possible evolutionary implications of this divergence are discussed.  相似文献

Studies were undertaken to examine the degree of divergence in four populations of pika in Colorado. Separation of blood proteins was accomplished utilizing acrylamide - gel disc electrophoresis. Separate analyses of variance were carried out for the relative mobilities of two of the transferrins (designated RM β 1 and RM β 2 ), the mean relative distance difference of the two transferrins (DM), and the density of the most prominent albumin ( α 1 ) and transferrin ( β 2 ) bands. Although the four populations were characterized by a general similarity of the gel patterns, both interpopulational and sexual variations were observed. Variations between the sexes had to do with the amounts of protein, not with differences in protein mobility. The only significant populational differences were found in reference to density and DM. The interpopulational differences may serve as an indicator of populational divergence that has not been indicated by standard morphological characters. The significant patterns of variation observed in the blood proteins of the four populations studied may reflect a lack of gene now between isolated populations.  相似文献

Iso-enzymatic polymorphism analysis was carried out on Tunisian populations of Porcellionides pruinosus to clarify their confused taxonomic status, previously revealed by reproductive and morphological approaches. Seventeen allozyme loci were studied, using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis, in 230 adult specimens belonging to nine populations of P. pruinosus located in north, central and south Tunisia, to assess the levels of their intra-genetic and inter-genetic diversity, and to analyse their genetic structure. Our results indicate a low genetic variability with a polymorphism ratio ranging from 29.4% in Tabarka to 47.1% in the Garat Nâam and Raccada populations, and the mean number of alleles per locus was estimated at 1.51 ± 0.15. The direct-count of heterozygosity ranged between 8.1% and 15%. Substantial estimates of demic structuring were found at the total population (FST = 0.198), with a generalized and significant heterozygote deficiency detected in every population (with a mean value for all populations of FIS = 0.372). Genetic distances between the studied populations were low, indicating that they belong to the same species. Nevertheless, the genetic analyses showed the divergence of the population of Tabarka from all the other studied populations, with the lowest mean gene flow, 0.58, and the highest mean genetic distance, (0.182) obtained also by the morphological and reproductive approaches.  相似文献

Patterns of genetic and morphometric variation amongst five populations of Potamonautes parvispina from two rivers in the Western Cape, were examined. Genetic variation at 14 loci was investigated using protein gel electrophoresis. The results showed that the populations were genetically invariant within and between the two drainage systems. Discriminant functions analyses of seven carapace variables demonstrated regional differentiation between the population groups in the two drainage systems. Other morphometric characters exhibited a significant degree of variation within drainage systems. Morphometric data were highly variable and were discordant with the genetic data, which suggests that environmental factors may be responsible for the large degree of phenotypic plasticity. Results from the present study are discussed in terms of widespread gene flow and recent population divergence.  相似文献

Fifty-seven individual plasma samples from desert tortoises ( Xerobates agassizi ) representing 10 separate populations were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using alkaline buffers. An albumin-like protein was found to be polymorphic for two electromorphs in northern populations inhabiting the Mohave Desert Province while Sonoran Desert populations to the south were monomorphic. The genetic divergence demonstrated in this survey is similar to earlier studies and provides evidence for the Colorado River as a potential barrier to gene flow among tortoise populations. These data suggest that tortoise plasma, examined by various electrophoretic methods, may provide a nondestructive means of determining the broad regional origin of desert tortoises.  相似文献

Genetics of Eusattus muricatus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) populations within Silver State Dune Complex in the northern Great Basin of North America were assayed using allozyme electrophoresis. Hierarchical F -statistics showed no significant population subdivision among 3 valleys comprising Silver State Dune Complex. A regression of estimated pairwise gene flow ( Nm ) against pairwise geographic distance was not significant for populations within these valleys, but it was significant over larger distances. A neighbor-joining phenogram did not represent geographic relationships among populations in the 3 valleys but reflected the past geologic history of these dunes. Pairwise divergence times were low (>7000 yr) for populations within Silver State Dune Complex but were high (>18,000 yr) in outgroups.  相似文献

Propomacrus cypriacus a saproxylic beetle endemic to Cyprus, was described as a species distinct from P. bimucronatus on the basis of a few morphological characters and has been evaluated as Critically Endangered by IUCN, as it depends on veteran trees and has a restricted distribution. Herein we explored the distribution, ecology, morphology and genetic variation of the populations from Cyprus, and we attempted a phylogenetic analysis including related species based on two mitochondrial and one nuclear DNA markers. We also used published mtDNA divergence rates to date cladogenetic events. Despite extensive sampling, we found only a small number of individuals, adding a few additional localities to the known distribution of the species, and we identified two more host species to those previously reported. Morphological examination showed that only the form of male protibiae differs consistently in Cyprus populations compared to those of P. bimucronatus from Turkey and the Lebanon. Nevertheless, genetic analyses do not support a distinct species status for populations from Cyprus, which should instead be considered as a subspecies of P. bimucronatus. Morphological and ecological data further support this conclusion. Cyprus populations have diverged from nearby continental ones in mid to late Pleistocene.  相似文献

Isoetes sinensis Palmer is an East Asia endemic fern that faces impending extirpation from the expansive area of Mainland China. Presently, only two natural populations are known to exist in this vast region. Both populations have decreased by about 50% within the last 4 years. This reduction is most probably related to the decline in the size of the wetlands since reproductive activity, spore production, and recruitment were noticeably lower at the microsites occurring in smaller ponds. The decline in population size seems to be associated with succession from marsh to dry land at the habitats of both populations. The study revealed that individuals in both populations produced copious numbers of spores suggesting adequate fecundity, furthermore high levels of spore germination were obtained in laboratory experiments. However, inefficient spore dispersal appears to have contributed to the limited spread of the species. The sex ratio in both populations was male‐biased. Several factors are identified here as posing a threat to Isoetes sinensis populations in China, chiefly the loss of habitat due to infrastructure construction and competition with adventive weed species for establishment on available sites. Disturbance by introduced mammals during browsing and trampling by livestock farm workers, as well as tourists, further contribute to the diminishing numbers of Isoetes sinensis at the study sites.  相似文献

Various abiotic and biotic factors are known to affect tree size, including age, genetics, and environment. Knowledge of size variation within natural riparian tree populations has both ecological and restorative importance. We determined tree sizes, basal area densities, and spatial distributions of 5 Populus fremontii Wats. populations within the Rio Grande watershed in New Mexico. At each site 10 randomly spaced plots, perpendicular to the river and extending from the river to the end of the forest, were established. Diameter at breast height (DBH) and distance to the river were determined for 1803 trees within the 5 populations, and stand cover (measured as basal area [BA] per hectare) was determined for each population. Significant variation in tree size and basal area density existed among sites. Mean DBH per site ranged from 11.7 to 58.4 cm and differed significantly ( P P 2 ha -1 . Spatial distribution of trees in relation to the river also differed among sites. Mean distance from the river ranged from 50 to 353 m and differed significantly ( P P. fremontii populations may be influenced by differences in water availability across a site; trees farthest from water sources may experience greater water stress and, therefore, growth limitation. Increasing BA cover with increasing tree size indicated no real thinning of mature trees within a population. Recruitment and establishment of cottonwood seedlings and saplings was evident only at sites with newly formed floodplains. For these 5 populations tree size appeared to be affected by environmental factors.  相似文献

Allelic variation at 21 of 39 electrophoretically resolved enzyme loci was used to examine patterns of geographic differentiation and population structure in six allopatric samples of Eutamias dorsalis . Coefficients of genetic similarity for paired combinations of E. dorsalis samples ranged from 0.955 to 0.975, except for one population that was 0.900. Conservative genic divergence among five populations is proposed to be the result of relatively recent isolation events. High positive F 18 values and chi– square analyses confirm a significant excess of homozygotes at several loci at the five localities for which sample sizes were statistically adequate. This may be partly attributable to inbreeding, a Wahlund effect, linkage disequilibrium, posttranslational modification, or some combination of these; but at present some of these alternatives cannot be excluded in favor of a single explanation. Some samples were collected across altitudinal gradients of over 800 m, suggesting that a Wahlund effect may be the most likely explanation for low levels of heterozygosity in these populations.  相似文献

Of 211 sites suspected of supporting the species based on interpretation of museum records, aerial photographs, soil maps, and interviews with biologists and area residents, 51 exhibited evidence of being inhabited when examined in summer 1982. Soil and vegetation components were sampled at 15 sites occupied by pygmy rabbits and 21 sites adjacent thereto. At inhabited sites, mean soil depth (51.0 ± 2.3 cm), mean soil strength of surface (0.8 ± 0.2 kg/cm 2 ) and subsurface (3.8 ± 0.3 kg/cm 2 ) horizons, shrub height (84.4 ± 5.8 cm), and shrub cover (28.8 ± 1.4%) were significantly greater ( P 2 ), density of forbs (3.4 ± 0.6/1,000 cm 2 ), and cryptogam cover (2.4 ± 0.5%) were not. Except for the clay component of subsurface soils, texture of surface and subsurface soils were not significantly different between sites occupied by pygmy rabbits and adjacent sites. The affinity of pygmy rabbits for areas with greater shrub cover, shrub height, soil strength, and soil depth, and, to a small degree, coarser soil texture possibly was related to availability of forage, security from predation, and ease of burrow construction. Analysis of 472 samples of sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata ) collected at and near sites inhabited by pygmy rabbits indicated their distribution was not dependent upon the presence of specific subspecies of sagebrush. A marked decrese in evidence of occupancy of sample sites and of pygmy rabbit activity at occupied sites in 1983 indicated that populations of pygmy rabbits were susceptible to rapid declines and possible local extirpation. Fragmentation of sagebrush communities poses a potential threat to populations of pygmy rabbits, but the severity of the threat presently is unknown.  相似文献

The systematics of Pyrenean and Cantabrian species of the terrestrial prosobranch genus Cochlostoma Jan, 1830 is readdressed using morphology of shell and soft parts, anatomy and allozyme electrophoresis. Ten biological species are recognized: C. obscurum (Draparnaud, 1805), C. crassilabrum (Dupuy, 1849), C. partioti (Moquin-Tandon, 1848), C. martorelli (Bourguignat, 1880), C. gigas Gofas and Backeljau, 1994, C. nouleti (Dupuy, 1851), C. hidalgoi (Crosse, 1864), C. bicostulatum Gofas, 1989, C. oscitans Gofas, 1989 and C. asturicum (Raven, 1990); forty other available species-group names are synonymized accordingly. The populations are very isolated one from another in the southern Pyrenees, with a high incidence of fixed alleles. Cochlostoma gigas is given species status but may be interpreted as a peripheral isolate from C. martorelli. The amount of divergence found between populations of C. martorelli is high, and the intrapopulation polymorphism is very low, a setting which is very prone to further breakup. In the Cantabrian range, C. asturicum has hardly diverged from C. hidalgoi, but fixed or nearly fixed alleles for three enzymatic loci are evidence for reproductive isolation in fully sympatric populations. Cochlostoma asturicum is nevertheless genetically closer to the local C. hidalgoi than the latter is to distant conspecific populations. This points to a sympatric speciation for C. asturicum. It is suggested that the montane habitat of several species is the consequence of an adaptation developed when a colder climate forced the species into coastal refuges. The onset of temperate climate could then result in a disruptive selection, with alternate pathways of a retreat to higher altitude, or colonisation of newly available space in the lowlands; this process is considered as a possible explanation for the lowland/montane divergence between C. obscurum and C. crassilabrum.  相似文献

Lewisia longipetala (Piper) Clay is a high-altitude endemic found in the northern Sierra Nevada. The characteristics of 12 sites with L. longipetala , which represent all known populations, were studied to define habitat requirements of the species. Meso- and microscale characteristics of the habitat were examined, including characteristics of the associated plant community. Average plant size and plant density of L. longipetala were also determined for each population. Similar measurements were made on 6 populations of Lewisia pygmaea (A. Gray) Robinson, a more common Lewisia . Populations of L. longipetala that had larger plants and higher plant density were associated with gently sloped, north-facing sites that were near large, persistent snowbanks and had low vegetative cover. Plant species associated with populations of L. longipetala were similar among the 12 sites and were indicative of mesic, rocky alpine sites. These types of plant communities found near persistent snowbanks are often termed snow-bed vegetation. In contrast, L. pygmaea was found to be less site specific. Lewisia pygmaea was found adjacent to or interspersed with L. longipetala at 5 sites, but was found in areas associated with a higher percentage of herbaceous cover and a wider variety of species. This integration of ecological community information for L. longipetala populations contributes to the interim management and long-term monitoring of this species by providing needed information concerning its habitat and environmental specificity.  相似文献

Yearly variation in numbers of cones produced by western white pine was found to affect the population level of the mountain pine cone beetle. In years when cone production is moderate to heavy, beetle populations increase. Increasing beetle populations are ultimately limited by poor cone crops, which increase competition for nutrients and oviposition sites. Variability in western white pine cone production is regarded as the most important factor regulating populations of the mountain pine cone beetle.     相似文献

ABSTRACT

First sampled in the late 1990s, Campamento Tortuguero La Gloria, in Jalisco, Mexico, was resampled for olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochyles olivacea Eschscholtz) diversity 10 years later. A comparison with all previously reported mitochondrial sequences revealed that these new samples added to the known genetic diversity for this species, and revealed unexpectedly high genetic diversity among turtles nesting on this beach. The results highlight the importance of systematic resampling in known nesting rookeries to verify the genetic diversity of study populations. Three new olive ridley haplotypes are reported, all more closely related to Baja Californian haplotypes than to Australian haplotypes. Significant genetic divergence is reported within populations, within ocean basins (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Indo-Pacific), and between ocean basins. Furthermore, this is the first study that integrates satellite tagging data to demonstrate diverse post-nesting migration patterns of turtles with identical haplotypes, and it demonstrates flexibility in post-nesting migratory behaviour for olive ridley sea turtles of the same genetic provenance.  相似文献

The structure of two populations of the fiddler crab Uca rapax in two subtropical mangrove habitats near Ubatuba, State of São Paulo, Brazil were compared. The size–frequency distribution, sex ratio, and recruitment were evaluated. Sampling was performed monthly from April 2001 to March 2002 in the Itamambuca and Ubatumirim habitats. Crabs were caught manually for 15?min by two collectors during low tide. The carapace width of each crab was measured with a digital caliper, and the sex and ovigerous state were recorded. The median size of the carapace width of males was greater than that of females at both sites (P<0.05). The median size of the crabs from Itamambuca was larger than at Ubatumirim (P<0.05). Only 28 ovigerous females were obtained from both mangroves, which suggested that females might remain in their burrows during the incubation period. The highest recruitment pulse occurred in winter for both populations, probably as a consequence of high reproductive activity during summer. The sex ratio in the size classes showed an anomalous pattern, with a higher frequency of females in the intermediate size classes. This may be related to a greater energy requirement for reproduction in females, thus delaying growth. The variable environmental conditions to which Uca rapax populations are subject appear to act directly or indirectly on the population, causing variations in growth and reproductive processes in the different populations investigated here.  相似文献

We investigated genetic variation within and between 3 populations of Gaura neomexicana ssp. coloradensis , a federally listed threatened species, using inter-simple sequence repeats. The data matrix included 24 individuals scored for 88 bands, with 3.4% missing data. Cluster analysis showed that members of the 3 populations are very similar and are intermixed in the phenogram. Principal coordinate analysis indicated that members of the Crow Creek population are different from the Diamond Creek and ""unnamed drainage"" populations. This could be the result of historic differences, current changes in vegetation at the Crow Creek site, or an artifact of limited sampling. In any case, for management purposes it is best to preserve the dwindling population at Crow Creek as well as the thriving populations at the other 2 sites.  相似文献

Earthworms are excellent indicators of landscape fragmentation due to their widespread distribution and poor dispersal abilities over water. Based on field studies conducted in the Shandong and Liaodong peninsulas and their associated islands during summer 2009, we analysed the genetic variation of Drawida japonica Michaelsen, 1892 (Oligochaeta, Moniligastridae) using DNA sequences of the 16S and 28S ribosomal genes in samples obtained from 13 localities, 12 of which were islands, one artificially connected to the mainland by man (Yangma SC). We identified 55 haplotypes among 79 samples, based on 1094 bp, including 47 unique haplotypes. The phylogenetic tree topologies showed two distinct clades. A multiple-apex Poisson distribution using a mismatch analysis of nucleotides was also detected. Results of a Tajima D neutral test were not significant (p > 0.05). Genetic divergence among populations was much larger than within populations. A positive relationship between genetic diversity and island area was revealed, but no significant correlation between genetic diversity and distance to the nearest larger landmass was found. These results indicate that the intraspecific genetic diversity of D. japonica has been influenced by geographic isolation (i.e. island habitat). Passive transport via anthropogenic activities or nonhuman vertebrates (birds or mammals) may also play a key role in dispersal.  相似文献

To overview the morphological and ecological diversification within a species of phytophagous ladybird beetle Henosepilachna diekei, information concerning its distribution and host plant use was studied. This species was found widely in South East and South Asia from the Philippines through the Greater Sunda islands, a western part of Lesser Sundas, the Malay Peninsula to Sri Lanka. Mikania species (Asteraceae), Mikania micrantha in particular, were the most frequently used host plants, but some other plants belonging to Lamiaceae or Acanthaceae were also used by some local populations. Each population is possibly monophagous. According to morphological analyses, seven populations from four host plants at six sites on four Indonesian islands were grouped into two, one occurring on Java and Kalimantan (Borneo) and another on Sulawesi and Lombok, indicating that they were separated by the Wallace line. This morphological distinction was not correlated with the host plant use.  相似文献
