Inhibition in the rat of gastric acid secretion and cyclic AMP analogs accumulation in vitro by somatostatin.

Various somatostatin (S) analogs exhibited similar degree and similar, or shorter, duration of inhibition of basal gastric acid secretion as S in the unanesthetized rat and similar, or less, inhibition of the cyclic AMP accumulation induced by prostaglandin E2 in the rat anterior pituitary in vitro. With the analogs examined, the gastrointestinal and pituitary receptors appear to exhibit generally similar recognition specificity with the differences within the gastro-intestinal activities reflecting duration of availability rather than receptor affinity.

Summary Immunization of mice with subcellular fractions ofC. fasciculata led to myocarditis and electrocardiographic alterations similar to those induced by immunization withT. cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas' disease, suggesting the presence of similar cardiotoxic antigens in both trypanosomatid flagellates.     

Comparative studies of murine anionic and cationic arylsulfatase B (1)

Murine brain possesses an anionic form of arylsulfatase B which accounts for approximately 12-16% of non-microsomal arylsulfatase activity. This isozyme is antigenically similar to cationic arylsulfatase B, displays a similar developmental profile, and can be converted to a form resembling the cationic species by prior treatment with neuraminidase.     

Antagonistic activity of galanthamine on constant infusion of pancuronium in rats

Summary The effect of galanthamine, an anticholinesterase having a tertiary ammonium group, on a constant infusion of pancuronium was studied in the rat tibialis anterior-sciatic nerve preparation. The results were compared with those previously obtained with neostigmine, pyridostigmine, and 4-aminopyridine. The antagonizing activity of galanthamine is similar to that of 4-aminopyridine and less than that of the other 2 anticholinesterases. The duration of galanthamine antagonism is similar to that of neostigmine and pyridostigmine but less than that of 4-aminopyridine.     

Mechanical and biochemical characterization of the contraction elicited by a calcium-independent myosin light chain kinase in chemically skinned smooth muscle

The contraction induced by a Ca2+-independent myosin light chain kinase (MLCK-) was characterized in terms of isometric force (Fo), immediate elastic recoil (SE), unloaded shortening velocity (Vus), shortening under a constant load and ATPase activity of chemically skinned smooth muscle preparations. These parameters were compared to those measured in a Ca2+ -induced contraction to assess the nature of cross bridge interaction in the MLCK-induced contraction. Fo developed in chicken gizzard fibers as well as SE were similar in contractions elicited by either agent. Vus in the contraction induced by MLCK-(0.36 mg/ml) was similar though averaged 39.3 +/- 8.9% less than Vus induced by Ca2+ (1.6 X 10(-6) M) in the control fibers. Addition of Ca2+ (1.6 X 10(-6) M) to a contraction induced by MLCK-resulted in small increases in both Fo and Vus. Shortening under a constant load was similar for both types of contractions. The contraction induced by MLCK-was accompanied by an increased rate of ATP hydrolysis. The MLCK-induced contraction is thus kinetically similar though not identical to a contraction induced by Ca2+. We conclude that with respect to actin-myosin interaction, MLCK-and Ca2+ -induced contractions are similar.

Stimulation of the growth of murine bone marrow colonies in vitro by an acute inflammatory exudate. Comparison with colony stimulating factor CSF)]

Formation of colonies from mice bone marrow progenitors of macrophages and granulocytes in methylcellulose culture was induced by an inflammatory pleural exudate obtained from mice injected with dextran. Mitogenic activity of this acute inflammatory exudate was compared with that of colony stimulating factor (CSF). It was found that colony and cluster counts, during 10 days of culture, were similar with the two types of stimulating factors. When used at the same dose, exudate was less active than CSF. It was concluded that inflammatory exudate showed an activity similar to that of CSF but contained a smaller amount of stimulating factor. Further cytochemical studies are necessary to specify whether or not the two factors induced the same type of colonies (monocytic or granulocytic).

Untersuchungen an Ionenaustauschmodellen zum Verständnis der Physiologie biogener Amine

Summary A synthetic ion exchanger containingR-PO(OH)₂ as active groups was shown to retain histamine and other basic substances selectively and, in most cases, with marked preference over the other cations (Na⁺, H⁺) present in the system. The results are taken to indicate that similar exchange reactions may occur on biogenic polyelectrolytes bearing similar active groups.     

Kinetics of insulin secretion in response to glucose by isolated islands of Langerhans from the fetal rat]

Isolated islets of Langerhans from 21.5 day-old foetal Rats were studied in a perifusion system in vitro. The overall dynamics of insulin release by the foetal islets in response to glucose 13.9 mM is biphasic and qualitatively similar to that obtained with islets of adult Rats. The magnitude of the initial phase of insulin secretion is similar for the foetal and adult islets. The second phase is fourfold higher in the adult than in the foetus. The response of foetal islets occurs, 45 to 60 sec. after the increase of glucose concentration in the medium and a maximum insulin release for the first phase is obtained with a lag period of 2 min. The difference between foetal and adult islets is essentially quantitative.     

Comparison of rat, mouse, guinea-pig and human slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A).

Slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis obtained from rat, mouse, guinea-pig and human tissues have exhibited similar biological activity and have reacted in the same way to chemical and enzymatic treatments. It is concluded that they appear to be the same substance or a similar class of compounds.     

Restoration of the poor oxygen transport function of ACD-stored blood by pyridoxal 5'-phosphate.

Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate is easily incorporated into ACD-stored erythrocytes without decrease of ATP, and restores the poor oxygen transport function with a similar effect to 2,3'-diphosphoglycerate.     

Pectinesterase from carrot (Daucus carrota L.)

Summary 3 multiple forms of pectinesterase were found in extracts and purified products from carrot, with a mol. wt near 27,000, similar in properties to the tomato pectinesterase.     

Differential expression of genes for uncoupling proteins 1, 2 and 3 in brown and white adipose tissue depots during rat development

The different expression patterns of genes for uncoupling proteins (UCPs) 1, 2 and 3 (ucp1, ucp2 and ucp3) were studied in interscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT) and in four white adipose tissue (WAT) depots (epididymal, inguinal, mesenteric and retroperitoneal) in male rats of different ages (18 days-12 months). UCP mRNA expression levels were determined by Northern blotting. In BAT, there were high levels of expression of UCP1 and UCP3 mRNA, but no detectable levels of UCP2 mRNA. Both ucp1 and ucp3 followed a similar expression pattern with age, with high levels in suckling rats which decreased to 50% or less in rats just under 2 months old, declining thereafter until 5 months and then recovering with age. However, an additional peak of expression was observed for ucp3 at the age of 3 months. In WAT, ucp1 expression was rare: occasional expression was found for UCP1 mRNA in the retroperitoneal depot in suckling rats and in the epididymal and inguinal depots in suckling and mature adult rats. ucp2 and ucp3 had different developmental expression patterns, but these were similar for each gene in the different depots studied. UCP3 mRNA was highly expressed in rats soon after birth, it decreased until 3 months, and increased thereafter, except for the mesenteric WAT where ucp3 expression decreased until 7 months before recovering. The fact that changes with age of both ucp1 and ucp3 expression have a similar profile in BAT, which is also similar to the ucp3 and also ucp1 profiles in some WAT depots, might reflect a common regulatory pattern for the expression of these genes, and also a common function. In contrast to ucp1 and ucp3, ucp2 had a peak of expression at about 2 months, and lower expression at 3 months, suggesting different regulation and probably a different role for this UCP.

We compared a simple complement-dependent lymphocytotoxicity test with a widely used indirect immunofluorescence procedure to enumerate total T, T helper, and T suppressor lymphocytes in normal blood samples. Results with the two techniques were closely similar.

The chemical structure of capreomycin.

The chemical structure of capreomycin, antituberculous peptide antibiotic, was revised from the results of NMR-analysis in comparison with tuberactinomycins. Capreomycin IA and IB were concluded to possess the similar amino acid sequences in their cyclic peptide moieties to those of tuberactinomycins.

Untersuchungen über Ultrastruktur und Aminosäurenzusammensetzung der Eischalen vonNatrix natrix

Summary The ultrastructures of eggshells ofNatrix natrix and the membrana testacea ofGallus gallus dom. are very similar, with the exception of cavity systems which only exist in eggshells of snakes (ringsnake) but not in the membrana testacea of birds. In the sheath of the fibres ofNatrix natrix, a positive ruthenium redreaction indicates the presence of mucopolysacharides, or proteoglycans. The eggshells ofNatrix natrix contain a high proportion of proline, but also of cystine, histidine and arginine. The high proline content is discussed with regard to the properties of poly-l-proline. Presumably proteins similar to collagen exist in eggshells ofNatrix natrix.
