The trail and alarm pheromones of the ant,Pristomyrmex pungens Mayr

Summary The trail and alarm pheromones of P. pungens were investigated. The nine fatty acids (C₁₄₀, C₁₆₀, C₁₆₁, C₁₈₀, C₁₈₁, C₁₈₂, C₁₈₃, C₂₀₄, C₂₀₅) were the components of the trail pheromone, while the alarm pheromone was found to be the mixture of 4 monoterpene hydrocarbons (-pinene, camphene, -pinene, limonene).The authors are indebted to Dr Masao Kubota for identification of the ant.

Summary In this note we claim that the two words and , which were used in Greece to indicate the geometrical point, had both been introduced in the scientific language in the first half of the IV^th century B.C., and that they became popular independently of each other in two different cultural circles, those of philosophy and of mathematics, respectively.We propose therefore, in contrast to a conjecture by Heiberg, a new explanation for the predominance of during the golden age of Greek mathematics and for the resurgence of during the period of decadence.

Diese und frühere Ergebnisse¹⁰ sprechen dafür, dass beide Substanzen gleichzeitig auftreten, und beweisen, dass -kristalline Substanzen in diesem Entwicklungsstadium alleine im Linsenepithel vorkommen, während die Kristalline die am spätesten nachweisbaren linsenspezifischen Proteine (Taylor-Kollros-Metamorphosestadium VI) in der Linsenentwicklung vonR. pipiens sind.     

Brain ischemia hypertension

Summary Hypertension was produced in anesthetized and conscious dogs when cerebral perfusion was reduced. It lasted up to 19 days in chronic studies, was not abolished by carotid sinus denervation nor with beta receptor blockade, but was absent after removal of brachiocephalic artery constriction (BCAC). The cardiovascular features of this neurogenic hypertension are presented.
