Microbial legradation of bitumen

Summary Bitumen is commonly employed as a matrix for the long-term storage of low and intermediate level radioactive waste. As bitumen can be degraded by microbial activity, it is of great significance to determine the rates at which it may occur in nuclear waste repositories.Experiments have been carried out under optimal culture conditions using bitumen with a highly increased surface area. The potential of different microbial consortia to degrade bitumen has been examined. The investigations showed clearly that bitumen-degrading organisms are ubiquitous. In general the organisms formed biofilms on the accessible substrate surface area. Under oxic culture conditions a bitumen degradation rate of 20–50 g bitumen · m^–2· y^–1 leading to a CO₂ liberation of 15–40 l was observed. Anoxic conditions yielded a 100 times smaller degradation rate of 0.2–0.6 g bitumen · m^–2 · y^–1 and a CO₂ production of 0.15–0.45 l.Based on linear extrapolation the experimentally determined degradation rates would lead to a 25–70% deterioration of the bitumen matrix under oxic and 0.3–0.8% under anoxic conditions within 1000 years.     

Biodegradation of bitumen used for nuclear waste disposal

Summary Studies have been carried out to test microbial degradation of bitumen used for encapsulating radioactive waste in Sweden. Microorganisms have been isolated that degrade bitumen. In ong-term tests under conditions simulating those in the silo part of the final repository for low-and intermediate-level radioactive waste, both aerobic and anaerobic degradation of bitumen has been found, equivalent to 0.6–1.5 moles CO₂/month·mg bitumen and 1.1–1.5 moles CO₂/month·mg bitumen, respectively.     

The effect of perchlorate ion and some pharmacological agents on the sensitivity of the frog (Rana pipiens) rectus abdominis to acetylcholine

Zusammenfassung Die Reaktion des mit Eserin vorbehandelten musculus rectus abdominis des Frosches auf Acetylcholin liess sich durch Oxotremorin (2.0·10^–5 M), Arecolin (2.0·10^–5M), Aceclidin (1.0·10^–4 M) und Carbachol (2.0·10^–7 M) verstärken, während Atropin (1.0·10^–5 M) hemmend wirkte. Perchlorationen in Konzentrationen über 2 · 10^–4 M sensibilisierten den Froschmuskel erheblich und reduzierten die Grenzdosis, bei der eine Potenzierung durch Substanzen mit muskarinähnlicher Wirkung beobachtet wird. Alle beschriebenen Reaktionen liessen sich durch Gehirnextrakte verstärken, in denen zuvor Acetylcholin durch Kochen in alkalischer Lösung zerstört worden war.

Dissociation-constants of metal-ion-complexes with alkaline phosphatase from pig kidney

Summary Using metal-ion buffers it was possible to remove Zn²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Mn²⁺ ions of pig kidney alkaline phosphatase reversibly. The dissociation constants obtained are K_EMg:4·10^–7 M, K_EMn:4·10^–8 M and K_EZn:8·10^–13 M (22°C, pH:9.6, :0.07).Acknowledgement: The authors thank Dr.H. U. Lack of pressor effect of dopamine in the pentobarbital-anesthetized rat

Summary The blood pressure and heart rate responses to intravenous dopamine infusion at 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 g·min^–1·100 g^–1 were studied in conscious and pentobarbital-anesthetized Sprague — Dawley rats. In the conscious rats, dopamine caused a significant dose-related increase in the mean arterial blood pressure which was abolished in the anesthetized rats. The heart rate increased significantly only at the highest dose infused. The responses to equipressor doses of noradrenaline (40 ng·min^–1·100 g^–1) and phenylephrine (1.0 g·min^–1·100 g^–1) were also suppressed in the anesthetized rats. The results suggest that pentobarbital anesthesia depresses the blood pressure response to dopamine infusion in the rat through a depression of activation of alpha-adrenoceptors.16 June 1986

DCP 1·10^–3 M and H₂O₂ 1·10^–4 or 1·10^–3 volume forLens and DCP 1·10^–4 M and H₂O₂ 1·10^–3 volume forPhaseolus nullify auxin catabolism.     

The number of neurons,glial and perineurium cells in an insect ganglion

Zusammenfassung Im zweiten Abdominalganglion der Indischen Stabheuschrecke (Carausius morosus Br.) wurden 600 ± 50 Neurone, 1000 ± 100 Gliazellen und 500 ± 30 Perineuriumzellen, zusammen etwa 2100 Zellen gezählt. Die Volumina des Ganglions, des Neuropilems und des Zellcortex betrugen etwa: 140 · 10^–4 mm³, 75 · 10^–4 mm³ und 65 · 10^–4 mm³.     

Influence of serotonin on the radiation sensitivity of lactate dehydrogenase

Zusammenfassung Die Veränderungen in der Strahlenempfindlichkeit von Milchsäuredehydrogenase durch Serotonin, gebraucht als Serotonin-Kreatinin-Sulfat, wurden spektralphotometrisch untersucht. Die Bestrahlungsdosen variierten zwischen 0–9 · 10⁵ R. Die Serotonin-Konzentrationen variierten zwischen 0–1,23 mM. Die D³⁷-Dosis für eine Serotonin-Konzentration von 246M ist ca. 34mal grösser als für die Kontrollen. Der Schutzeffekt kann durch eine Komplexbildung zwischen Serotonin und den Metallionen, die im Enzym-Molekül vorhanden sind, erklärt werden.     

Variations de l'activité des auxines-oxydases dans les racines duLens

Summary 2, 4-dichlorophenol (DCP), 2, 4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and 2, 4-dinitro-o-cresol (DNC) applied at a concentration of 1.10^–7 to 1.10^–3 M, produce a dramatic increase in IAA-oxidase activity in young cells ofLens root. IAA destruction by breis from root tissues was inhibited by Mn⁺⁺ ion at low concentrations of DCP (1·10^– to 1.10^–7 M), but was enhanced by Mn⁺⁺ ion at higher (1.10^–5 to 1.10^–3 M) DCP levels.

Inhibition of catalase by (Arylthio)-acetohydroxamic acids

Zusammenfassung Leberkatalase wird durch (Arylthio)-acetohydroxamsäure gehemmt. I₆₀ Werte: 4.5·10^–3 to 1,0·10^–4 M.p-Bromoderivat (pI₅₀=4.0) zeigt die stärkste Hemmung. Substitution in der Para-Stellung des Benzol Ringes verursacht eine zunehmende Hemmung in der Reihenfolge: CH₃OCH₃ClBr. Es wird vermutet, dass sich der Hemmstoff nicht mit dem aktiven Zentrum des Ferments verbindet.     

The action of iodoacetate on the antigenic power of insulin

Résumé Nous avons observé que le iodoacétate en concentrations de 1·10^–4, 5 · 10^–5 et 1 · 10^–5 M et préalablement incubé à 37 °C, a une influence de l'ordre de 61, 50 et 44% respectivement sur la totalité du pouvoir antigénique de l'insuline de buf. L'effet inhibitif est proportionnel à la durée d'incubation et l'on ne constate pas de différences lorsque les concentrations de l'hormone se trouvent entre 100 et 300U/ml.     

Kinetics and inotropic action of probenecid in guinea-pig heart in vitro

Summary Probenecid (100–750 g·ml^–1) was found to inhibit cardiac contraction force in untreated and digoxin-treated (100 g·ml^–1) isolated right guinea-pig atrium in vitro by a reversible process, without influencing beating frequency. At low concentrations (1.5–60 g·ml^–1),¹⁴C-probenecid was accumulated into right atrium by an oxygen-dependent process. Correlation between uptake and negative inotropic action of probenecid could not be found.     

The effect of proctolin on the adenylate and guanylate cyclases in theLocusta brain at various developmental stages

Summary Proctolin at concentrations 10^–8–10^–7 M elevated by 40% brain adenylate cyclase activity of adultLocusta migratoria migratorioides R.F. In moulting individuals, proctolin caused a decrease in brain adenylate cyclase activity, and it proved to be ineffective in the larvae. Proctolin caused only a slight decrease on guanylate cyclase activity of the brain at every developmental stage.     

Interaction of diltiazem with propranolol on atrioventricular conduction and refractoriness in the dog

Summary Propranolol pretreatment (0.1 mg·kg^–1) significantly increased the lengthening induced by diltiazem (0.15 mg·kg^–1+0.01 mg·kg^–1·min^–1, 20 min) of the A-H interval of His bundle potential recordings in the dog. In the presence of propranolol, diltiazem also significantly increased the atrioventricular effective refractory period. The results suggest the possible occurrence of AV blocks as a result of the use of a diltiazem-beta blocker combination in clinical practice.Acknowledgments. Financial support from the U.E.R. Influence of cyclic nucleotides on protein synthesis in vascular smooth muscle

Summary The incorporation of leucice-¹⁴C into protein in bovine mesenteric arteries was augmented by cyclic GMP (10^–3 M) and decreased by cyclic AMP (10^–3 M). There was no effect of 5 AMP (10^–3 M). The phosphodiesterase inhibiting drugs theophylline (10^–3 M) and papaverine (5×10^–5 g/ml) both decreased the leucine-¹⁴C incorporation.We are indebted to Mrs.Lena Burlin for hear assistance. Modification of theophylline-induced lipolysis in human fat cells after trypsination

Summary Trypsin-treatment of human fat cells results in the potentiation of the lipolytic response and the cAMP accumulation induced by theophylline (5·10^–4 M) but not of those induced by theophylline (5·10^–3 M). The amount of cAMP formed after exposure to theophylline (5·10^–3 M) plus norepinephrine (5·10^–6 M) remains, however, 2.6fold higher in trypsin-treated human fat cells than in the control ones.Acknowledgments. Summary The red-brown haemovanadin which is contained in the haemolysate (Henze Solution) of blood cells of the ascidiaPhallusia mamillata Cuvier is a chromoproteid with trivalent vanadium as the central atom and sulphuric acid bound coordinatively. It is found to have a molecular weight of 24,400±1,900 according to the estimation of the diffusion coefficient (D_5°=6.87±0.2 · 10^–7 cm² · s^–1 at pH 2.5–2.8).

The effect of insulin on the electrophoretic mobility of rat hepatocytes

Summary The addition of insulin (10 U) to a suspension of isolated hepatocytes in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate solution. causes an increase in the negative electrophoretic mobility of the cells from –1.68 m sec^–1 V^–1 cm to 2.26 m sec^–1 V^–1 cm. This observation supports the findings by other workers that the binding of insulin to its receptor leads to a marked change in the membrane.Acknowledgment. Peroxidase-Isoenzyme in Kressekeimlingen (Lepidium sativum L.) und ihre Hemmung durch Silybin,Silydianin und Silychristin

Summary Seedlings ofLepidium sativum L. contain 4 peroxidase isoenzymes. Their de-novo-synthesis is significantly depressed in the presence of 3·10^–3 moles/l silybin, silydianin and silychristin in the incubation medium respectively.     

Abbau von Quarz mit Brenzkatechin

Summary Fine divided HF-etched quartz was dissolved in a 0.2M solution of pyrocatechol at pH 9.6. Between 17 and 40 °C the dissolution rate (v _s ) follows the equation: logv _s =0.0295 T-20.87 At 25 °Cv _s amounts to 0.8 · 10^–12 g cm^–2 sec^–1. With several phenols the dissolution rate of quartz decreases in the order: pyrocatechol > pyrogallol > 2, 3-dihydroxynaphthalene.
