The Great Gatsby is a significant classic in American literature and Fitzgerald is also considered as a chronicler of the"Jazz Age".The women characters play an important role in revealing the theme of the novel. The paper analyzes these women characters and points out their function juxtaposed against Gatsby. These women are all the victims of a society of wealth in American twenties.Compared to Fitzgerald's life, his attitude toward women and love is ambivalent. What happens to Gatsby is a warning to the rest of mankind. In the progress of realizing our own dream,we should be and can be soberer than those protagonists in the novel.  相似文献

The Great Gatsby narrates a symbolist tragedy in a transitional era. It's ambivalent characterizationand themes find justifications in the writer's own ideology of two opposed ideas ,and in his efforts to define andjudge subjects of social problems. The ambivalent characterization concerns the writer's dual response to theprotagonist's corruption and innocence respectively.Ultimately the writer is convinced that both the corruptionand innocence are justifiable in the morality of his protagonist.Whereas the ambivalent themes dealing withthe American dream attach importance to the social class perspectives and the vision of history, undoubtedlythe writer slides into a compromise with his themes:repudation and approval.Because of the equally strong in-terplay of two opposed ideas, the writer fails to locate a definite position and scale, which results in his imma-ture control in the art of the work. The writer's characteristic code and achievement are significant becausethey genuinely reveal human being's fundamental dilemma in social life.  相似文献

As the spokesman of the Jazz Age,F.Scott Fitzgerald ,based on his own experience, writes his masterpiece-The Great Gatsby.Through abundant symbols,Fitzgerald profoundly depicts the social prospect of Jazz Age and successfully displays the process of the disillusionment of American Dream which exists in majority people in 1920s.This paper, based on some basic symbolic theories, discusses how the author brings the deep philosophy to the surface to show his attitude,to reveal the theme by these symbols. And by analyzing the symbolic meanings of some characters,it further probes some causes for the failure of American Dream and how the author pays attention to common human nature.  相似文献

Charles Dickens(1812-1870) is the greatest representative of English critical realism, a classic of world literature. The greatness of Dickens lies not only in his satirical portrayal of bourgeoisie and in the exposure of the greed and hypocrisy of the upper class, but also in his profound humanitarianism, which is revealed in his sympathy for the labor people.  相似文献

Ralph Waldo Emerson, born in 19th century's America, is most famous for his transcendental ideas and writings. He was deeply influenced by European Romanticism in his thirties and formed an informal Transcendental Club with people of like minds. His thought is often considered the core of Transcendentalism. "Nature" is the fundamental document of his philosophy and an embodiment of his transcendental attitude towards the phenomenal world. He also wrote some other brilliant essays such as "The American Scholar", "Self-Reliance", "The Over-Soul" and "The Poet", etc, all of which established his indisputable position in the history of culture, especially in the American Culture where he is regarded as the one who, in literally terms at least, really put America on map. But considering Emerson's writings without significant emphasis on his verse would be a great loss. Emerson wrote poetry from the time he was a boy to nearly the end of his life. These poems are essential for understanding him and his transcendental theories and are receiving more extensive representation in anthologies while significant critical analyses are emerging though some modern readers and scholars tend to view his poetry as secondary to the "essential" Emerson. In view of the above, this paper supposes to introduce Emerson's views on poets and poems and then analyze some of his famous poems in the order of 'Emerson as a Poet', 'Emerson's Views on Poets and Poems' and 'Emerson's Poems' with the third one as the focus of this paper. The purpose of this paper is to try to make the comprehension on Emerson and his abstract transcendental theories more complete and thorough by emphasizing his contribution in the poetic field.  相似文献

Antarctica is an important research region for assessing persistence and long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this study, XAD-resin passive air sampling was conducted near the Chinese Great Wall Station, Antarctica, during a one-year sampling period in 2009-2010. The air concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were at a very low level, with total PCBs in the range of 26.74-45.08 pg m 3. PCB profiles were dominated by tetra-PCBs, tri-PCBs and di-PCBs, indicating LRAT was responsible for the pollutants in the Antarctic atmosphere. The sampling site near the Chinese Great Wall Station did not show higher PCB levels than the other sites, suggesting that PCB sources associated with the Great Wall Station were negligible. PCB-11 is a non-Aroclor congener, which has specific sources compared to other Aroclor PCB congeners. PCB-11 was observed in all air samples, with an average concentration of 1.22 pg m 3. To our knowledge, this study is the first investigation of PCB levels and distribution in the atmosphere around the Chinese Great Wall Station, Antarctica.  相似文献

The decryption participant’s private key share for decryption is delegated by key generation center in the threshold IBE scheme. However,a key generation center which is absolutely trustworthy does not exist. So the author presents a certificateless threshold public key encryption scheme.Collaborating with an administrator, the decryption participant generates his whole private key share for decryption in the scheme. The administrator does not know the decryption participant’s private key share for decryption.Making use of q-SDH assumption, the author constructs a certificateless threshold public key encryption scheme. The security of the scheme is eventually reduced to the solving of Decisional Bilinear Diffie-Hellman problem. Moreover, the scheme is secure under the chosen ciphertext attack in the standard model.  相似文献

Thomas Hardy is a novelist and poet, generally regarded as one of the outstanding figures in English literature. Most of his novels take place in the "partly-real, partly-dream" county of Wessex (named after the Anglo-Saxon kingdom which existed in the area) and called Wessex Novel. It is regarded as the reflection of his hometown Dorset. His novel creation could be generally divided into three periods. The first period was romantic and pastoral; the masterpieces are Under the Green Tree and Far from the Madding Crowd. His second period mainly focuses on the social tragedy of Wessex, such as The Return of the Native and The Mayor of Casterbridge .In the last period of his creation, he began to write the pessimistic fate of the villagers in Wessex, this could be seen through Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. From the evolution of Wessex we can know the English society in the 19th century as well as Hardy's love for his hometown and his individual philosophy.  相似文献
