Impaired proximal tubular transport functions in anaesthetized splanchnicotomized dogs

Summary The maximal tubular transport of inorganic phosphate,d-glucose and para-aminohippuric acid, respectively, was depressed on the denervated side in unilaterally splanchnicotomized, anaesthetized dogs. Deficiency in renomedullary prostaglandin synthesis related to the evolution of essential hypertension

Summary Continued PG synthesis in the early stages of essential hypertension might reflect an activation of the renal antihypertensive function in respect to neurogenic and/or hormonal pression stimuli, subsequently a deficiency of renal PG synthesis related to irreversible changes with the kidney would lead to the prepoderance of a pressure mechanism, resulting to a further increase of blood pressure.We thank Dr.J. Establishment of normal diploid and malignant heteroploid cell lines from non-treated and benzo(a)pyrene treated hamster embryo cell cultures

Summary Two normal diploid control cell lines and a heteroploid malignant transformed cell line from B(a) P treated hamster embryo cell cultures were established. The 14-month-old B(a)P transformed cell line grew 8-times faster than the 20-month-old control cell line. The control cell line showed normal diploid chromosome complement in 93% cells and heteroploidy in 7% cells while B(a)P treated line showed 83% heteroploid cells and only 17% diploid cells. This is the first report on the establishment of diploid hamster cell cultures grown for extended period. Acknowledgments. On the role of the decreased renal vascular resistance in the mechanism of volume natriuresis

Summary Acute hypohysectomy (AH) prevented the increase of the cardiac output, renal cortical blood flow (e.g. the decrease of the renal vascular resistance) and renal sodium excretion during the ECFV expansion. The non-occurrence of natriuresis in AH rats is suggested as being partly in causal relation to the inability to decrease the renal vascular resistance and thus to increase the peritubular hydrostatic pressure.Expert technical assistance of Mrs.E. Effect of (+)-catechin on renal and intestinal transport

Summary The ability of dog renal cortex slices to accumulate -methyl-glucoside or glycine is enhanced by the flavonoid (+)-catechin at a concentration of 3.5 mM. This stimulatory effect is apparently due to a decreased rate of efflux of either substrate. On the other hand, the uptake of p-amino-hippuric acid and N¹-methyl-nicotinamide is inhibited by (+)-catechin. The drug at the same concentration is without action on amino-acid transport by guineapig intestine in vitro.This study was supported by grants from Zyma S.A., Nyon. We are grateful to MmesH. Insect venoms: Identification of dopamine and noradrenaline in wasp and bee stings

Zusammenfassung Die Anwesenheit von Dopamin und Noradrenalin im Bienen- und Wespengift wurde durch Fluoreszenzmikroskopie, Dünnschichtchromatographie und Spectrophotofluorimetrie nachgewiesen. Der Dopamin-Gehalt eines Stiches genügt, um die Herztätigkeit eines Insekts zu beschleunigen, was auch die Verteilung der giftigen Bestandteile zu den Wirkungsstellen beeinflussen kann.

Eco-physiological studies onZornia diphylla pers. with reference to adaptive seed dormancy

Summary Seeds ofZornia diphylla possess a complex type of dormancy which is of great survival value for the species. Seeds show polymorphism. The optimum temperature for germination explains the cause of its distribution in the tropics. The grazing and scraping promotes the vegetative growth.The author is grateful to Dr.R. Sahai and Dr.R. Effect of substrate pretreatment on renal organic ion transport in the adult rat

Summary The ability of renal cortical slices to accumulate PAH and NMN was not significantly affected by pretreatment of adult rats with large doses of PAH. Pretreatment of adult rats with THAM significantly increased PAH accumulation but had no effect on NMN. Inulin and PAH clearance and filtration fraction were significantly decreased by PAH pretreatment but unaffected by THAM pretreatment. The effects of pretreatment on transport are probably due to non-specific toxicity.Supported in part by U. S. Columnar cells of the parietal layer of Bowman's capsule and their relationship with the sexual cycle in normal female mice

Summary The tubule-like cells (TLC) are present also in the parietal layer of the Bowman's capsule of the renal corpuscles in normal female mice kidney. These cells are morphologically similar to the cells of the proximal convoluted tubule. Further, significant variations of the TLC were present according to the phase of the sexual cycle.The authors are greatly indebted to Dr.Pietro Motta for his valuable suggestions and criticism, and to Mr.Isidoro Vittori for his valuable technical assistance.     

The effect of renal hydrodynamics on immune complex deposition

Summary The role of renal hydrodynamics on renal deposition of immune complexes was evaluated in acute serum sickness. Alterations in the structure of theOctopus vulgaris chromatophore by cytochalasin B

Zusammenfassung Nachweis, dass die Chromatophoren vonOctopus vulgaris bei Inkubation mit Cytochalasin B strukturelle Veränderungen zeigen. Eine signifikante Zunahme von Pigmentkörnern ausserhalb des Pigmentbehälters ist festzustellen. Es wird angenommen, dass Cytochalasin B einen Mechanismus stört, der normalerweise Zusammenhalt und Verteilung der Pigmentgranula koordiniert.

Comparison of the effects of illumination on the melanophores of intact and eyestalkless fiddler crabs,Uca pugilator,and inhibition of the primary response by cytochalasin B

Summary Approximately 100 times more illumination is required to produce pigment dispersion in the melanophores of eyestalkless fiddler crabs (Uca pugilator) than in the melanophores of intact crabs. The pigment in melanophores of isolated legs will normally disperse in response to irradiation, but this response is inhibited by cytochalasin B.This investigation was supported by a Faculty Research Grant from Western Kentucky University toT. The role of glycine in the biosynthesis of a terpene

Zusammenfassung Mit doppelt markiertem Glycin konnte gezeigt werden, dass das Kohlenstoffatom der Methylgruppe viel besser als das Kohlenstoffatom der Karboxylgruppe in die Isoprengruppe des Ophiobolins B ausCochiobolus miyabeanus eingebaut wird. Die Radioaktivität wird in Ophiobolin B eingebaut, wenn die folgenden Verbindungen verwendet werden: [3-¹⁴C]-Serin, [¹⁴C-Methyl]-Sarcosin, [¹⁴C-Methyl]-Methionin, und [¹⁴C] Formate.

Allergic encephalomyelitis: Inhibition of cellular passive transfer by exogenous and endogenous steroids

Zusammenfassung Injektionen des Antientzündungssteroids Dexamethasone oder eine Hypersekretion des endogenen Kortikosteroids als eine Reaktion zum unspezifischen Stress verhindern die zelluläre passive Übertragung allergischer Enzephalomyelitis. Deshalb kann angenommen werden, dass Steroide die enzephalitogene Wirkung von vollkommen immunisierten Lymphoidzellen verhindern.

Suppression of ethanol withdrawal by dopamine

Summary An ethanol-inhalation technique was used to determine a potential relationship between dopamine and central nervous effects produced by alcohol. Bothl-DOPA and intracranially injected dopamine resulted in attenuation of ethanol-induced withdrawal convulsion scores, whereas, haloperidol, a known dopaminergic blocker was found to significantly increase convulsion scores.We thankB. Enhancement of tubular organic base accumulation in renal cortical slices by repeated administrations ofTris-hydroxymethyl aminomethane,tromethamol (THAM) to rats of different ages

Summary After repeated THAM administrations to rats of different ages, an enhancement of THAM accumulation in renal cortical slices was observed, except in newborns.
