Temperature-induced reversal of dominance of variegation in ‘Ornamental kale’

Résumé La transmission de l'albinisme panaché deBrassica oleracea L. ne dépend que d'un seul facteur. Chez les hétérozygotes ce caractère apparaît à basse température (7°C), mais pas à haute température (21°C). Chez les homozygotes le caractère se manifeste probablement toujours, tout en restant peu prononcé à des températures plus élevées. Ainsi il y a une inversion du caractère dominant avec changement de température.

Riassunto Sono state studiate le variazioni del rapporto tra l'N proteico e non proteico in segmenti rigeneranti, nucleati ed anucleati, diAcetabul. medit. I risultati ottenuti hanno dimostrato che il predetto rapporto aumenta in entrambi i segmenti il primo giorno dopo l'operazione. Nei giorni seguenti esso diminuisce in entrambi i segmenti, ma più sensibilmente in quelli anucleati, nei quali va al di sotto del valore medio delle alghe normali già dopo il 3°–4° giorno.     

The role of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the regulation of pancreatic β-cell mass: implications in the development of type-2 diabetes

Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose concentration in the context of insulin resistance and/or relative insulin deficiency. It causes metabolic changes that lead to the damage and functional impairment of organs and tissues resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. It is this form of diabetes whose prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate due to the 'obesity epidemic', as obesity is a key risk factor in the development of insulin resistance. However, the majority of individuals who have insulin resistance do not develop diabetes due to a compensatory increase in insulin secretion in response to an increase in insulin demand. This adaptive response is sustained by an increase in both β-cell function and mass. Importantly, there is increasing evidence that the Serine/Threonine kinase mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) plays a key role in the regulation of β-cell mass and therefore likely plays a critical role in β-cell adaptation. Therefore, the primary focus of this review is to summarize our current understanding of the role of mTOR in stimulating pancreatic β-cell mass and thus, in the prevention of type-2 diabetes.     

The “day of Brahman” in the work of Āryabhata

Summary In the astronomical treatise ryabhatya of ryabhata several verses are interpolated, namely all those verses in which either Brahman was mentioned or extremely large periods were introduced. The interpolator was known to AlBrn as ryabhata of Kusumapura, who belongs to the school of the elder ryabhata. The aim of the interpolator was to bring the teaching of the elder ryabhata into accordance with the revelation of Svayambh. Svayambh is another name for Brahm.     

Occurrence of β-chitin in the cuticle of a Pentastomid Raillietiella gowrii

Summary The purified chitin from the cuticle of a pentastomid was examined by X-ray method. The X-ray photograph discloses that the chitin in question is of -type. Since the arthropod cuticle contains -chitin, it is suggested that Pentastomida may be considered an independent phylum.Thanks are due to Prof. Dr. G. Characterization of the role of metallothionein-3 in an animal model of Alzheimer’s disease

Among the dementias, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most commonly diagnosed, but there are still no effective drugs available for its treatment. It has been suggested that metallothionein-3 (MT-3) could be somehow involved in the etiology of AD, and in fact very promising results have been found in in vitro studies, but the role of MT-3 in vivo needs further analysis. In this study, we analyzed the role of MT-3 in a mouse model of AD, Tg2576 mice, which overexpress human Amyloid Precursor Protein (hAPP) with the Swedish mutation. MT-3 deficiency partially rescued the APP-induced mortality of females, and mildly affected APP-induced changes in behavior assessed in the hole-board and plus-maze tests in a gender-dependent manner. Amyloid plaque burden and/or hAPP expression were decreased in the cortex and hippocampus of MT-3-deficient females. Interestingly, exogenously administered Zn₇MT-3 increased soluble Aβ40 and Aβ42 and amyloid plaques and gliosis, particularly in the cortex, and changed several behavioral traits (increased deambulation and exploration and decreased anxiety). These results highlight that the control of the endogenous production and/or action of MT-3 could represent a powerful therapeutic target in AD.     

Age- and sex-related differences in the content of prothymosinα in rat tissues

Differences in the tissue content of prothymosin during the early postnatal development of male and female rats are reported. Thymus and spleen have been found to contain significantly higher amounts of prothymosin in the newborn and prepubertal animals, as compared to adults, whereas liver has been found to contain low levels of prothymosin throughout development. These findings indicate a functional association of prothymosin with the proliferating lymphoid tissues of the young rat.     

Increase in cystathionine β-synthase activity in the liver of rats treated withl-ethionine

Résumé Une seule injection d'éthionine (400 mg/kg) provoque une augmentation significative de l'activité de la cystathionine -synthase du foie de rat. La méthionine empêche l'effect de l'éthionine, tandis que l'actinomycine D, le cycloheximide, la méthionine sulfoximine, la méthionine sulfona et l'ATP ne le modifient pas. In vitro, l'éthionine n'a aucune influence sur l'activité de la cystathionine synthase hépatique.

Dynamics of the interaction of γδ T cells with their neighbors in vivo

γδ T cells are a diverse component of the immune system in humans and mice with presumably important but still largely unknown functions. Understanding the dynamic interaction of γδ T cells with their neighbors should help to understand their physiological role. This review addresses recent advances and strategies to visualize the dynamic interactions of γδ T cells with their neighbors in vivo. Current knowledge regarding the dynamic contacts of tissue resident γδ T cells and epithelial cells, but also of the communication between circulating γδ T cells and DCs, monocytes and FoxP3⁺ regulatory T cells is revisited with emphasis on the role of γδ T cell motility.     

Localisation of acetylcholinesterase in rat myotubes in the presence of β-endorphin and β-endorphin-(1-27)

Summary In rat embryo skeletal myotubes, acetylcholinesterase is present, as multiple forms, and can be detected in deposits at the cell surface. Myotubes cultured in the presence of -endorphin, exhibit an increased predominance of the globular (precursor) forms of the enzyme, which are largely restricted to intracellular sites associated with nuclei. In the presence of -endorphin-(1-27), the relative proportions of the different forms of acetylcholinesterase is similar to that seen in the controls, but the enzyme is intracellular and has a characteristic focal localisation in the myotube.     

Distribution of microspheres of 15±5 μm diameter in dog kidneys

Summary The size distribution of plastic non-radioactive microspheres (MS) of 15±5 m diameter in the dog kidney was investigated. No diameter-dependent redistribution of the MS was found.Acknowledgment. Specific inhibition of formation of acid-fastness in mycobacteria by 3,3′-di-O-methylellagic acid

Summary 3,3-Di-O-methylellagic acid obtained fromEuphorbia adenochlora selectively inhibited the formation of acidfastness in mycobacteria without retardation of their growth. Gross reductions in contents of wax D, cord factor and free mycolic acids were found in the nonacid-fast bacilli compared with the normal ones.     

Determination of diel periodicity of sex pheromone release in three species of Lepidoptera by ‘closed-loop-stripping’

Summary By means of closed-loop-stripping and subsequent GC analyses the diel periodicity of release of (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, (E)-8-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, the main constituents of the respective sex pheromone blends ofMamestra brassicae, Cryptophlebia leucotreta andSpodoptera sunia females, was determined.Pheromones, 64. ‘Chromatoid body’ in the spermatogenesis of scorpions

Etiologic factors in Paget’s disease of bone

Paget’s disease of bone is a chronic focal skeletal disorder characterized by increased bone resorption by the osteoclasts. Paramyxoviral gene products have been detected in pagetic osteoclasts. Paget’s disease is an autosomal dominant trait with genetic heterogeneity. Several mutations in the ubiquitin-associated (UBA) domain of sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1/p62) have been identified in patients with Paget’s disease. Similarly, mutations in the valosin-containing protein (VCP) gene have been shown to cause inclusion body myopathy associated with Paget’s disease of bone and frontotemporal dementia. In addition, gene polymorphisms and enhanced levels of cytokine/growth factors associated with Paget’s disease have been identified. However, the etiologic factors in Paget’s disease remain elusive. A cause and effect relationship for the paramyxoviral infection and SQSTM1/ p62 gene mutations responsible for pagetic osteoclast development and disease severity are unclear. Dopamine-β-Hydroxylase activity in serum of developing rats

Summary After birth, the activity of dopamine--hydroxylase in rat serum increased up to 14 days maximal level and decreased gradully to reach a low level at 42 days which was about 14% of the activity of maximal activity at 14 days.
