The desulphation of hexosamine sulphates by arylsulphatase B1

Summary The sulphation of Carbobenzoxyglucosamine by chlorosulphonic acid resulted in formation ofN-carbobenzoxyglucosamine-4,6-disulphate. UDP-galactosamine 4-sulphate and glucosamine 4,6-disulphate were the competitive inhibitors of arylsulphatase B. Arylsulphatase B can hydrolyze UDP-galactosamine 4-sulphate and glucosamine 4,6-disulphate but not galactosamine 6-sulphate.The work was done at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, and the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India.     

C-banding pattern on the chromosomes of the Japanese house shrew,Suncus murinus riukiuanus,and its implication

Summary The C-band on the chromosomes of the Japanese house shrew,Suncus murinus riukiuanus (Insectivora), was studied. Various types of C-banding pattern were found in the genome of this subspecies. Such banding patterns could be useful for an understanding of autosome and sex-chromosome polymorphisms withinS. murinus.Acknowledgment. The authors are very grateful to Prof. T. Distribution ofγ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the ganglia ofAplysia kurodai

Summary The concentration of GABA was determined in each ganglion ofAplysia kurodai by microassay. Highest concentration was observed in buccal ganglia.The authors are indebted to Miss C. Synthesis of 6-deoxy-6-fluoro-L-ascorbic acid

Summary 6-Deoxy-6-fluoro-L-ascorbic acid has been synthesized in 5 steps starting from 2,3-4,6-di-O-isopropylidene-2-keto-L-gulonic acid.Dedicated to Professor Albert Szent-Györgyi, National Foundation for Cancer Research, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, on the occasion of his 85th birthday.     

Presence of giant mitochondria during cerebellar ontogenesis in reptiles

Summary Giant mitochondria were observed in the perikarya and dendrites of Purkinje cells in the developing cerebellar cortex of the lizardGallotia galloti at sevral stages previous to hatching. Such mitochondria are absent from the adult cerebellum.4 December 1986The authors would like to thank Prof. L. Demonstration of the structural connections of the longitudinal muscle cells and circular muscle cells,and interconnections between the two,in the alimentary canal of an oligochaete,Branchiura sowerbyi B.

Summary The longitudinal and circular muscle cells of the alimentary canal of the oligochaete wormBranchiura sowerbyi show intercell couplings. These couplings occur between adjoining cells of the same or of the other orientation.We wish to thank Dr S. Kawaguti, Prof. emeritus of Okayama University, for his kind advice.     

Aminotransferase study ofNeurospora crassa ser-3 versus wild type ST4A

Summary TheNeurospora crassa serine auxotrophser-3 and the wild type ST4A were compared with respect to their phosphoserine and serine aminotransferase activities. The results obtained indicate no deficiency of either of these enzymes in the mutant strain.This work was supported in part by a grant to D.G. from the California Foundation for Biochemical Research. On the inhibitory action of endosperm on germination ofCercis siliquastrum seeds

Summary The endosperm inhibits the growth of embryos isolated fromCercis siliquastrum seeds. The inhibitory activity is present in autoclaved homogenates as well as in homogenates remaining after an extraction with chloroform or isobutanol.Acknowledgment. The authors wish to thank Prof. E. Defensive substances of opilionids

Summary The defensive secretions of 4 species of opilionids were analyzed.Leiobunum ventricosum andHadrobunus maculosus produce 4-methylheptan-3-one, whileL. calcar produces E-4,6-dimethyl-6-octen-3-one.L. longipes produces E-4,6-dimethyl-6-nonen-3-one, a new natural product.Paper No. 51 of the seriesDefensive Mechanisms of Arthropods.Acknowledgments. A preliminary note on the relationship between the number of adultPrays oleae Bern. caught in pheromone traps and the resulting level of infestation

Chromosome change during growth inPuschkinia libanotica L. (Liliaceae)

Summary The variation in chromosome size in root-tip meristem ofPuschkinia libanotica L. was studied at different days of root growth with special attention to DNA, RNA, total protein and histone contents. The results show that the size and organisation of chromosomes even within the one tissue is subject to considerable change during growth and development.The author is thankful to Prof. H. Effect of various factors on the activity of trehalase from the larvae ofSesamia inferens walker (Insecta)

Summary Trehalase from the salivary glands and the midgut ofSesamia inferens showed optimum activity at pH 5.8, and at temperatures of 50 and 60°C respectively. The increase in the incubation period, enzyme concentration, and substrate concentration respectively increased the end-product, the hydrolysis, and the rate of hydrolysis of the substrate. Dialysis did not affect, tryptophan accelerated, and other amino acids and end-product inhibited the enzyme activity.The author wishes to express his thanks to ProfessorR. Nervous and behavioral responses to light in colonies of the free-living bryozoan,Selenaria maculata (Busk)

Summary Bursts of electrical impulses which spread throughout the entire colony were recorded from individual zooids ofSelenaria. Strong illumination caused a rapid increase in the frequency of bursts and also caused the colonies to start moving, usually towards the light the recorded electrical activity may act to trigger locomotor behavior.We are grateful to Dr P. Huygens at work: Annotations in his rediscovered personal copy of Hooke's Micrographia

It is well known that Hooke's wave theory of light, set forth in his Micrographia of 1665, is viewed as a step towards Huygens's famous theory of light. This view depends mostly on some short remarks given by Huygens in his Traité de la Lumi`ere (1690) and the earlier Projet du Contenu de la Dioptrique (1673). Huygens's personal copy of Micrographia was believed to be lost until found at Braunschweig (Brunswick) University Library by the author three years ago. It is annotated at Observ. IX (pp. 47–67) only, where Hooke deals with his wave theory of light and colours. This article provides a short review of Hooke's theory, and an interpretation of Huygens's annotations, which show clearly the first steps towards the opinions he was to express in his Traité de la lumi`ere, particularly methodological ones. Furthermore, a short comparison is here drawn with Huygens's annotations in his copy of Ango's L'optique divisée en trois livres, which show similar patterns of reasoning.     

Localization of vitelline-coat lysin purified from testis of a top shell,Turbo cornutus

Summary The vitelline-coat lysin purified from the testis ofTurbo cornutus was found, by an immunofluorescence technique, to be located in the acrosome of the sperm, which suggested that the lysin reacts with the vitelline-coat in an early phase of fertilization to allow the sperm to penetrate through the coat.We are grateful to Professor M. Genetic characterization of the new morphological and UV-sensitive mutants inCoprinus cinereus. I. A UV-sensitive mutationrad1 associated with elevated frequencies of mitotic and meiotic recombination

Summary Studies on the effect of an UV-sensitive mutation,rad1, in meiotic and mitotic recombination inCoprinus indicated that, in homozygous condition,rad1 increased the spontaneous meiotic recombination by 50% and UV-induced mitotic intergenic recombination by about 5-fold. The homozygousrad1 diploid was shwon to be much more sensitive to the recombinogenic effects of polyfunctional than of mono- or non-functional alkylating agents.This research, carried out in partial fulfilment of Ph.D. requirements at the University of London, was supported by a grant from The School of Public Health, University of Tehran, Iran.
